This entry has mostly dead links. I would try to find them in the Internet Archive Wayback, but... the way that the editor "fixed" them was to remove the URLs altogether. Thus there is nothing to search for in the archive. I did try to search for some other citations but have not found any yet other than the two I added recently which were the ProRodeo Hall of Fame, and the PBR article on Heroes & Legends: Ring of Honor. I will endeavor to find more occasionally while I work on other tasks. I'm sure there will be some since the subject is still living. Dawnleelynn (talk) 21:10, 28 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Category American Christians removal

Marcocapelle So I don't even rate a comment as to why you've removed the category again after my edits? I added content showing that the category is not a non-defining category but that being Christian is an integral part of Smet's life. I, myself, watch his evangelical messages from time to time. I am not into edit warring so I'm asking to see what's up. Did I not add enough content to make my case, because I can add more if so. I've noticed that you are targeting this category and have left its removal alone on rodeo categories where I really didn't see any evidence of subject's claim on faith in their career or life in a defining way. But in this case, it's definitely a defining characteristic. Would appreciate a response, thanks! dawnleelynn(talk) 20:28, 4 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Marcocapelle You could've let me know what your deal is instead of just removing the category again with no explanation. Are you removing them all for a specific purpose like they are in a diffusing category and should be in a sub-category? There's a reason I steward all of the rodeo articles. When categories are dropped with no explanation and no replacements, I am going to take care of the articles in some fashion. Perhaps the deal is that these active Christian rodeo people should be in sub-categories of this category. Or, perhaps they should be in categories somewhere else. Yes, I've used HotCat and I know you can't leave comments. But I have used it to make obvious edits or take out categories and replace them with others. So? dawnleelynn(talk) 22:30, 4 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • It's not a matter of there is not enough content to make a case. You shouldn't even try making a case. Just being a Christian and talking about it is not a defining characteristic, that applies to more than half of the Americans. The information about his Christianity is correctly placed in the "personal" section, and we hardly ever categorize people by characteristics in that section. The defining characteristic of Rob Smits is having been a bullfighter, not being a Christian. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:59, 5 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

Marcocapelle I did not say he talks about it. I said he evangelizes and shares his faith (testimony). There's a big difference. If only half of Christians would actually do that! I've been an evangelist and a missionary so I know what I'm talking about. I don't "talk to people" but I share the gospel. Under Smets' career, is his PBR bucking bull Jeremiah 33.3 named for a bible verse. That was a work related faith item. For bull rider Mike Lee, there's several things he does on the job to evangelize. What about Tim Tebow? His faith directs everything he does. He evangelizes while "on the job." There is much written about his faith in his article, some in a personal Christianity section, but then also much that is written throughout his career sections as well.

That brings me to defining characteristics. The WP:COPDEF policy "the reason(s) for the person's notability; i.e., the characteristics the person is best known for." In Tim Tebow's case, there is no doubt that much of his fame is due to his Christian faith. He would not be as well-known without the faith controversies. He gained publicity for the eye black messages and what is now known as Tebowing, among other things. Even today, he gains publicity, like for his faith for the eye black on his baseball team. In the same way, Mike Lee is known on the bull riding circuit as a man of faith because of demonstrations of faith and his testimonies. This makes it a defining characteristic. Smets is no longer a bull rider, but he does own a bucking bull. Does that mean that his article cannot be updated anymore because his only defining characteristic is bullfighting? And well, now stock contracting? No, he is also an announcer now. And he goes on the road and shares his faith. So some argument could still be made that it's a defining characteristic. Still wondering about the answers to my questions, thanks. dawnleelynn(talk) 16:05, 5 November 2017 (UTC)Reply

    • Marcocapelle, you are conflating notability and defining characteristics. Here this individual defines themselves by their faith, thus a religion category is appropriate. You have not cited any reference to guidelines or policy that says otherwise. If you find something, do post here, but otherwise, a category needs to be included.
