Son of William Iron-Arm? This should be fact-checked. I don't believe it is so.
Parentage edit
The page originally called him a son of William Iron Arm and Maria of Sorrento. In fact, William's wife was a sister (Guida according to some sources) of Maria. Maria married Wm's half-brother Wm of the Principate. The page now calls him a son of Drogo, Wm Iron Arm's brother and Altrude of Salerno. The Dizionario Biografiche degli Italiani gives Wm of the Principate a son named Richard. This is all very confusing, especially when there exist so many poorly researched genealogies (especially on the web) to add to the confusion. Contradictory sources edit
Some (online) sources (French and German Wikipedias, Lexikon des Mittelalters) indicate that he was the seneschal of Apulia and Calabria in 1101 (this date may be off). That contradicts what I assume comes from Beech. I have left the contradiction in the article as is. I will correct it as soon as I have an answer. Srnec 15:38, 8 May 2006 (UTC)
Merging of two different historical figures edit
This article is the result of the merging of two different historical figures, in fact Richard of Salerno or Hauteville (1060-1114) was son of William of the Principate and was the one who participated at the First Crusade; his homonym cousin Richard of Hauteville (1045-1110) was the son of Drogo of Hauteville and was the one who was appointed seneschal of Apulia and Calabria in 1101.
