It should be "Machtesh Ramon". There are no craters in Israel. all of them are machteshes. it's a different thing. A crater is a shock mark, a place where a meteorit hit the earth. a machtesh is a unique geological phenomenon. the whole category should be erased and rewritten.

I disagree. There are two issues here:
1) Is there such a thing as a karst crater? If so, then there are craters in Israel. Need to find a geologist to decide that one.
2) Are these formations (whatever they're called) really unique to israel? I would find it surprising, although I'd readily believe that they're the largest. Time to find a real source.

I was told by the NSPCI החברה להגנת הטבע that it shoud be call "Machtes Ramon", and also - that there are similar formations tho much much smaller in the siny desert.

the Ramon phenomenon is one of the unique Makhtesh[im]. it is not a crater. Yosi I 23:51, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

According to Hebrew WP: There are 7 Makhteshim, or erosive craters, in the world. 2 in Sinai peninsula and 5 in the Negev. The other 2 are small mathteshim in Har Arif, south of Makhtesh Ramon.--Nitsansh (talk) 21:09, 28 November 2007 (UTC)Reply
