Talk:Police vehicles in the United States and Canada

Wisconsin edit

The new Wisconsin State Police cars don't have light bars, everything is concealed. They are marked, but the lights aren't visible unless they're on or you look closely. It's not just a few cars - every single new police car I have seen is set up this way. They are marked on the sides, top, front and back, but the lights are hidden. Pictures edit

Could we put up some Canadian police pictures? So far all I see is NYPD and other american cruisers. That or make Canada its own article if this one is US dominated. Bretonnia (talk) 17:44, 10 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think the light schemes used in various jurisdictions would be a nice addition - The local police in Ontario use all red lights on their light bars, while in Ohio the all-red color scheme is reserved for commercial vehicle enforcement police. Kentucky uses a blue with white strobe scheme for their state police, with the local police using red white and blue lights.

US and Canadian police cars are identical other than lightbar color schemes and layouts and police markings and km vs MPH speedometers, I think a single article is correct. P38fln (talk) 20:47, 13 October 2017 (UTC)Reply

random comment edit

I just thought I'd add that the most amusing thing is that the three most popular police cars used in the USA - the Interceptor, the Impala and the Charger - are all made in Canada. Snickerdo 21:11, 30 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Edmonton Police cars or taxis?(the paint scheme)... edit

I don't know about now, but long ago in Edmonton, Alberta(Canada), their police cars were painted to look like taxis(yellow w/ checkboard pinstripes and blue lightbars on roof)...

To Edmontonians: what do they look like now?...thanks...Michaela92399 02:23, 2 August 2007 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for posting the current picture of a Edmonton police car...I'm sure going to miss the old "taxi" paint schemes!...Michaela92399 (talk) 02:08, 18 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

There are Canadian tidbits in this article, that should go in its own article, or this one should be renamed Raguv2000 18:59, 28 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

As an Edmontonian, i can tell you that the Edmonton Police no longer use any Taxi Yellow cars. They are all standard white and blue. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.222.208.75 (talk) 04:08, 9 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Other police vehicles edit

I think the "Other police vehicles" section should be cleaned up. Many police departments have "one-off" vehicles that were either purchased as a public relations vehicle, undercover vehicle, accquired from a drug seizure or some other unique situation. This section really should contain vehicles that are unusual from the typical police car but still in actual police service. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.20.202.97 (talk) 07:00, 22 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

This unreferenced section is growing and becoming a collection of useless trivia. It is time to remove it. CZmarlin (talk) 14:45, 19 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Arkansas State Police Camaro edit

I'm surprised that nobody has mentioned that the Arkansas State Police use Chevrolet Camaros for traffic enforcement.

These cars have no light bar (lights in the grill or the window I forget), and I would say are "semi-unmarked"....meaning that the only markings on them are the ASP's sticker on the passenger door only. They were meant primarily, I think, to catch speeders on the new I-540 route between I-40 and Fayetteville, AR. This is fact, I have seen more than one personally, and I first found out about it on a news cast from KFSM.

I have also heard rumors that the ASP is using dodge Chargers not only with the 3.5L and 5.7L, but the 6.1L engines as well. Anybody able to confirm that??

Service life edit

In the US & Canada, how long do cop cars typically stay in service before they're retired? 72.209.42.92 (talk) 18:51, 25 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

The Chevy Impala info is outdated edit

It has been available with a V8 engine for years now, to both civilians and law enforcement.

This has made it a much more attractive option to police agencies.

I would add the info myself but adding sources and sections in Wikipedia is beyond my abilities, I'm afraid I don't have a clue how to do it. 24.77.46.54 (talk) 03:46, 6 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Undercover Taxi Police Cars edit

Apparently the NYPD has undercover police cars that look like taxi cabs.

Virginia Police Cruisers Adding Ford Interceptor to Lot edit

The Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority (MWAA), the Virginia State Police, Arlington County Police and the Fairfax County Police have started adding the Ford Taurus Interceptor to their inventory. The "interceptors on duty" link show you which States use the new Ford Interceptor now so you can update the info on the wiki page.

PPV for non-GM vehicles? edit

PPV is what Chevy calls it's latest Caprice. That branding doesn't apply for any other car. A vintage Dodge Monaco for example isn't a "PPV", that terminology wasn't around back then. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.182.53.90 (talk) 17:18, 8 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Inconsistent manufacturers edit

Which of these is not like the rest?

3.1 American Motors Corporation 3.2 Chrysler 3.3 Ford Motor Company 3.4 General Motors

“Chrysler Corporation / Fiat Chrysler” would make more sense for 3.2, IMHO.

Alternatively, and in my opinion a better way to do it, would be:

3.1 American Motors 3.2 Chrysler 3.3 Ford 3.4 General Motors

Because that would be consistent with all the other automakers. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.127.145.177 (talk) 20:39, 9 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Vermont edit

Would anyone else besides me like to contribute a section for Vermont, it's not even in there. Not An Average Guy (talk) 05:50, 26 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Move Canada to its own article? edit

I believe Canada should have its own article because the wiki page is already taking up too much space and contains a mix of states and provinces in one section. Sure, the usage of vehicles is similar in both countries, with some unique differences between the two. But at the same time, I think it's safe to say that Canada should have its own set of police vehicles so it's more organized, less clumsy, and to avoid confusion while scrolling. "Models by manufacturer" and "Other police vehicles" edit

Where do I begin with these sections? The "Models by manufacturer" section lists every single model that has ever been used as a police vehicle in the United States or Canada, while "Other police vehicles" is basically the same thing, but listing every vehicle currently used by every department that currently exists, down to specific units and markings. For starters, they almost entirely lack citations. They constantly refer to departments without Wikipedia articles, or to vehicles only used by specific units, or to vehicles already mentioned earlier in the article as standard police vehicles that are common (Explorers, Crown Victorias, Tahoes, etc.). I don't believe we need these indiscriminate lists. It feels like police buffs are just adding the fleets of departments in their province or state without regard for notability. It should be noted that similar pages, such as Police vehicles in the United Kingdom and Police vehicles in Belgium, don't have these issues. I think we might be able to keep these sections, but they'll need a lot of reworking and trimming. I'll probably get to work on these, but if anyone wants to help, they can; I just thought I'd type this out so people don't think large text removals from me are vandalism. AdoTang (talk) 19:00, 26 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Update: ended up deleting both sections. Too big of a mess to work with. Think this was a good fix though; can't think of another way to salvage that stuff. AdoTang (talk) 00:24, 27 September 2022 (UTC)Reply

Response cars edit

This section is pretty rough and confusing. Specifically referring to the part where it says the vehicles are commonly seized. Grammar and wording is tough I had issues understanding it at first. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.252.65.134 (talk) 07:45, 7 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
