Name of article

edit

Hello,

Just wondering if this if the best name for this article. If anyone has any suggestions of what to change it to, I would much appreciate it. =)

Thanks ツStacey (talk) 10:30, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

The article only deals with such powers in the UK, understandably, but this should be reflected in its title (e.g. "... in the United Kingdom"). (E, W, S and NI? Or only some of them?) I wonder whether the word "child" should be in there somewhere, or if "powers" would be better than "provisions"... BencherliteTalk 14:17, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Thats exactly why I asked the question! I am happy for it to be changed if anyone has any better ideas.. I just didn't want to make it too long and then no-one ever finds the article! ツStacey (talk) 14:21, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Background - Before Children Act 1989?

edit

Hello,

Does anyone have any ideas of what was in place before the Children Act 1989? What powers did police previously have with regards to protecting children?

Thanks, ツStacey (talk) 10:32, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I copied your question over to the Ref Desk. Didn't think you would mind. Here's the link: Click me Jenova20 (email) 11:40, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Picture/ Image?

edit

Hello,

Anyone have any ideas for a picture or image that could be used; or is it not required? Is there a template for that we use for sections or Acts?

Thanks, ツStacey (talk) 10:33, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Well for an infobox, you could try Template:Infobox document. It's what is used for United States Constitution. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 11:45, 4 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
The standard template for a UK act is {{Infobox UK legislation}}, but I don't think there's one for a section of an act. I have to say though that I'm not sure I see the logic in keeping this article separate from the main Children Act 1989. Eric Corbett 14:22, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
This is separate because if I explain fully all the sections/orders the Act is going to be huge.. Children Act 1989 is only about a 3rd complete.. ツStacey (talk) 14:30, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Fair enough, but in that case I think you need to give this article a more relevant name. Before I read it I assumed it would be about things like witness protection programmes, not the protection of children. Eric Corbett 14:39, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
Police child protection powers in the United Kingdom, perhaps? The provisions should be briefly summarised in the CA1989 article and linked here with a {{main}} or something similar. BencherliteTalk 14:47, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I'm not picky about the name.. Please do change it.. I was quite aware that it needed to be more specific but as I said above, I had no ideas what to put it as! =) I will mention it in the CA1989 when I get to that section! Haha.. I am only a few sections away! ツStacey (talk) 14:58, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply
I think Bencherlite's suggestion is a good one, so I've done the move. Eric Corbett 15:08, 5 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

I saw your request for help and thought I would have a look. I thought your lede was a bit wordy. Keep sentences short. It thought the bit about Child Protection Orders was misplaced in the lede. Here is my suggestion:

"In the United Kingdom, police child protection powers concern the power of the police to intervene to safeguard children. These powers are governed by Section 46 fo the Children Act 1989. Under this law, the police have the power to remove children to a safe location for up to 72 hours to protect them from "significant harm". Police do not require a court order to take such a step."
