Disambiguation of rugby players named Peter Ryan

edit

I note that there are two rugby players named "Peter Ryan" with Wikipedia articles, currently named Peter Ryan (rugby union) (this article) and Peter Ryan (rugby, born 1971). It seems to me this disambiguation is inconsistent and confusing. Would it not be better for these articles to use the same form of disambiguation, i.e. either:

  1. Peter Ryan (rugby union) and Peter Ryan (rugby league), or
  2. Peter Ryan (rugby, born 1940) and Peter Ryan (rugby, born 1971)?

Unfortunately, although preferred by the naming conventions for sportspeople, I don't think the disambiguators "rugby union" and "rugby league" are helpful here; "Peter Ryan (rugby union)" could describe either player as Peter Ryan (rugby, born 1971) played both codes. (If they weren't both Australian we could perhaps have used their country of origin.)

It seems to me that the most straightforward course of action is to move this player to Peter Ryan (rugby, born 1940) and to relink to there, then point Peter Ryan (rugby union) to Peter Ryan as an ambiguous disambiguator. I hope everyone is content with this proposal. I will wait a while for comments, if there doesn't seem to be an easy consensus, we can initiate a formal move request.
