Validity of this article

edit

There is a discussion at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Biography#Are the Chappelles for real? — Cheers, Steelpillow (Talk) 18:53, 14 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

The wording of this heading (Validity...) is confusing. You appear to be concerned about the subject's notability. In my view, his notability is undoubted. However, the article does need to be slightly re-formatted to demonstrate that notability and to align with WP:MOS; and additional online and other reliable secondary sources need to be added. I'll give it some more thought. Ghmyrtle (talk) 07:05, 15 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
Online sources which could be added to the article include this, this, this, and this. There are good images here and here, if someone is able to upload them (which I'm not willing to attempt). Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:00, 15 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

We should discuss recent edits here. Essentially (for the benefit of other editors), the article was started by new User:HACNY, who provided a detailed summary of Chappelle's life based on (apparently) offline sources. Having started and edited the article on the Rabbit's Foot Company (and the one on F. S. Wolcott, etc.), I then expanded the article, added images, added reliable online sources, removed what I considered to be trivia or irrelevancies, and brought the structure and prose more into line with WP:MOS. These edits added some new information but reverted many of my changes to format, style, etc.. I have now retained the additional information but reverted to my previous wording in some instances, for formatting and style reasons, and I have explained my reasoning at User talk:HACNY. Further discussion should take place below. Ghmyrtle (talk) 08:33, 16 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hi Ghmyrtle, why was the Grand Opening of the Buckingham Theater removed? It opened in December 1901, as reported on the front page bottom of the newspaper "The Morning Tribune" Tampa, FL on December 24, 1901. It was the Buckingham Theater's Saloon that opened in 1899 as my version correctly had, as the theater was being renovated. This is an important point. Timelines are often used in encyclopedias, and I have seen some timelines in Wikipedia. Obviously, I found now the talk page on this. The reason I removed it was that this source (p.250) says that Chappelle and Donaldson opened the Buckingham Theater Saloon on September 24, 1899, with a good source, and further that by March 24, 1900 it was reported as being "crowded to the doors every night...". There may be a conflict between sources - which we can address - or it may be that the two sources are talking about different things. The "Grand Opening" may have happened two years after it was actually opened for business, for some reason, or as you say the Saloon and the Theater may have had different opening dates - but it would be useful if you provided a source for that. In any event, it needs clarifying, and I saw no reason to depart from the wording in the book, rather than your version which comes from a source that I haven't seen. I know that some of your sources are online because I've found them independently. Are your other sources online? If so, your citations in the text should include the URL, as other editors (like me) may want to access them. Thanks. Ghmyrtle (talk) 13:00, 16 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I'm happy with these changes - thanks for clarifying it. Ghmyrtle (talk) 13:06, 16 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
Hi Ghmyrtle,

I put back in the Grand Opending of the Buckingham yesterday with source, and added a few words to it today in that area. I added a little to one of the headings today instead of Vaudeville, Vaudeville traveling shows... Anyway, the article looks fine now. I have no complaints. Thanks again for the additions and images.
