Derry English

As I'm both Welsh and Irish, I find the easiest way to explain the Welsh "u" (which I'm pretty sure is this IPA sound) is to compare to the way Londonderry people pronounce "cow", which is something like "cou" (in Welsh phonetics). ConCass (talk) 11:54, 8 February 2014 (UTC)

IPA Vowel Chart

Sorry, but the vowel chart shown in this article with the heading 'IPA Vowel Chart' is NOT the official IPA vowel chart, as can be seen by looking at the chart in WP's IPA article or on the IPA's own website. It is a vowel chart based on the IPA's but with additions made by WP editors. RoachPeter (talk) 17:14, 19 November 2014 (UTC)

It states nowhere that it is the official vowel chart. Removing from it vowels that are not present on the official IPA chart is a very bad idea, because it'd render articles about [ɪ̈, ʊ̈, e̞, ø̞, ɤ̞, o̞, ä, ɒ̈] almost unavailable for readers. We'd then need to merge the articles about:

• ɪ̈ with both [ɪ] and [ɨ]
• [ʊ̈] with [ʊ], [ʉ] and [ʏ]
• [e̞] with [e] and [ɛ]
• [ø̞] with [ø] and [œ]
• [ɤ̞] with [ɤ] and [ʌ]
• [o̞] with [o] and [ɔ]
• [ä] with [a] and [ɑ]
• [ɒ̈] with [ɶ] and [ɒ]

No, I'm not suggesting removing the extra vowel symbols from this chart, and I'm sorry if I gave that impression. I agree that that would make the articles you listed less intelligible. My only point here is that the chart is labelled "IPA Vowel Chart", and to me that means "The vowel chart of the International Phonetic Association". The chart in this article is an IPA vowel chart with added symbols. I'm afraid this is an issue that has been taken up several times recently by active members of the IPA like me who see WP editors making changes to IPA conventions but continuing to use the name IPA as if it just meant "phonetic". I guess it's too late to stop this practice now. But for me, it would be better to call your vowel chart simply "Vowel Chart". RoachPeter (talk) 07:48, 20 November 2014 (UTC)
