Featured article edit

I feel this article should be a Wikipedia Featured Article.

I agree, quite nicely written. In the light of new found interest in the jain caves in thiruvattar, knowledgable addition to the ancient jain link will be nice

more photographs will be nice. I took the link to padmanabapuram palace which did not find any photographs either!

This is a wonderful work, keep it up.

Deleted content edit

I am refining the content of this article and I have removed the following paragraph and replace with a better version of it:

From Language, Culture & Religion - The town comes alive during the time of Christmas in the Christian neighbourhood with lights, decorations, Christmas trees, groups singing carols and festive shopping. Apart from major Tamil festivals, Onam (Keralite festival) also is celebrated here (a local holiday).
From Language, Culture & Religion - Christianity, both Roman Catholics and Protestants is widely practised. There are also some Orthodox Christian denominations like Marthoma and Jacobite Christians. Almost all the major Protestant denominations are found in the town. The place also has a large number of Hindus, Ayyavazhis and significant numbers of Muslims living mainly in the Kottar area and its surroundings.

If you think it needs to go back then please review my changes before making your changes

I have also observed that a lot of POV content exists in the article. For example:

Socio-Economic Factors & Local Economy - The remittances from relatives earning outside the town and abroad (many in white collar jobs), counts for a major difference in the socio-economic status of the town - as an indicator, land prices are comparable to a bigger city in Tamilnadu. The rural areas around do not resemble the 'typical' Tamil villages in other parts of Tamilnadu - with large numbers of educated people, terraced houses, greenery, roads and access to the town, ground water, educational institutions, etc. found through the length and breadth of the populated areas of the district - much like that of Kerala.
Lack of cheap, industrial land and ignorance in infrastructure development by successive State Governments has left the town and the district dry of big business, though there is a high potential in the fields of Tourism (eco-tourism), Information-technology and knowledge based industries, rubber-based industries (the raw material rubber is available in plenty), agro and marine food-processing industries, shipping container trans-shipment terminals (at Colachel - a natural harbour), etc. The undeveloped port of Colachel near the town could be one of the closest ports in India to international shipping lanes, if developed.

I am at a loss here because the two paragraphs are just too messy. Maybe someone can just quickly get something out of it. My suggestion would be to remove it altogether since it would not impact this section. Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 06:17, 14 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Question about content edit

Its about the history of Kanyakumari, Marshal Nesamany is also a member among thousands of fighters for getting Kanyakumari as part of Tamil Nadu, Marshal Nesamany led Congress party members, But Marxist Communist party is also had an Important role in that fight. If i am right Nagercoil is a city in Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu. There is a lot of content about the district. Should not this be residing in in the article Kanyakumari? It is just making the article way too long. Every where I see there is a lot of talk about the district than the city itself. This article needs a lot of work. Any suggestions?Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 08:43, 14 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, the contents can be moved to the article on kanyakumari district.rmaria2005

I appreciate your feedback but I am waiting for a response who is more familiar with districts and cities in Tamil Nadu. I see that it was a former candidate for a featured article and maybe we can work towards it. Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 09:42, 15 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

This is found in the demographics section, and it makes no sense: As of 2001[update] India census,[1] Nagercoil had a population of 208,149. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Nagercoil has an average literacy rate of 99%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 87%, and female literacy is 83%. In Nagercoil, 9% of the population is under 6 years of age.

How can the literacy rates be 85% and 99% at the same time? 199.103.239.131 (talk) 14:17, 13 January 2009 (UTC)hppbostonReply

More deleted content edit

The tsunami tragedy which affected Nagercoil should not be mentioned here. It should conform with other cities which were also tsunami affected. For reference check out Chennai which has this one liner about the tragedy

"In 2004 the Indian Ocean tsunami lashed the shores of Chennai, killing many and permanently altering the coastline."

So i am going to move the content out and put in a similiar one liner

The Indian Ocean Tsunami
"Tragedy struck on the morning of 26th December, 2004 when huge killer waves swept away hundreds of men, women and children in different parts of the District, just as it struck other coastal areas of the Indian Ocean region (many probably never had heard about a Tsunami before). The official death count in the District was put at around 900, with many more missing. The Tsunami has permanently altered the coastline. In the aftermath of the Tsunami, the Government is still to work out a plan to keep the normal tidal waves from entering the land, because of the flattened coasts. The coastal communities are slowly getting back to business, thanks to help from Government agencies and the NGO's. Several NGOs are helping in the re-construction of houses, and also subsidising on new boats and nets for fishermen. The beaches near Nagercoil are once again slowly beginning to get the weekend crowds ; but the people haven't forgotten the awesome power of nature - how it can even strike several countries at the same time, with such ferocity." Split edit

This article needs to split. There is a lot of content which should be residing in kanyakumari district. I am not sure if i am allowed to put up the template. Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 10:29, 15 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

The article was made comprehensive by the efforts of contributors. I am from kanyakumari district hence it may not be a problem to check the facts. Creater of this article Rrjanbiah and many others have added the contents. All the contents in the nagercoil hold good for kanyakumari district. The contents under

6 Geography 6.1 Soil types 7 Socio-Economic Factors & Local Economy 8 Notable Facts 9 Climate 10 Flora and Fauna 11 Marine Life and Resources 12 Places of interest 13 Education were added based on various research work. I shall be happy if we work towards making kanyakumari district as a featured article. Suggestions from other contributors are also welcome.rmaria2005

Actually I more interested in making Nagercoil as a featured article since it failed its last nomination. Maybe at a later stage I can work on kanyakumari district but presently I am trying to understand the procedure in splitting the nagercoil article. Oh btw you need to use (~~~~) to sign your name. It is much easier!!! Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 10:00, 16 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. The sections on soil types, marine resources (Nagercoil is not a coastal area), list of major crops, list of educational institutions in kanyakumari district can go separate as the data is for the district.RMAJ 01:43, 17 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

So a suitable approach would be (if it is possible for you) is for you to take out those content with regard to the district and push it into appropriate places in kanyakumari district. Once you are through then I can work with Nagercoil Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 04:02, 17 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I have split and moved some district info. The town is referred to in place of district. Still I think the article is long. Some heads like population and location is short. If we could further shorten without affecting the contents, that would be fine RMAJ 06:20, 20 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

These are the following changes that needs to be made:
  1. The subtopic Geography should be after History.
  2. The subtopic Flora and Fauna should be either merged with Geography or create a new topic with the title as former. Refer the Geography section in Chennai.
  3. The subtopic Location should be merged with subtopic Geography.
  4. Population needs to be renamed as Demographics. I am using Chennai as my base reference to conform the similarity.
  5. Language, Culture & Religion needs to be renamed as Culture and something better needs to be added. Again we can use Chennai's culture as a reference. The present content is unacceptable. So if anyone stays in Nagercoil can jot down something unique in the culture of Nagercoil.
  6. The Arrival of European missionaries needs to be renamed as Influence of European missionaries
  7. Socio-Economic Factors & Local Economy needs to be renamed as Economy and content copyedited.
  8. Notable Facts needs to be removed and the content merged (if really necessary) to other subtopics.
  9. Location should be a subtopic under Geography
  10. Places of interest needs to be refined.
  11. Education needs to more work.
  12. Communications renamed to Media. Unless someone adds more about the local media it can be merged with Education and the combined content can be renamed as Education and Media.
  13. Famous Personalities should be removed. It does not conform with other Indian cities featured articles.

As I continue working on this article, I will be removing quite some content which will be appropriately added to this talk page in its respective subtopic titles. If you are going to add it back then please drop a comment under that subtopic for the reason of your action.

If you do make any changes which may match the above list, then please strike it out. Once this list is taken care of, we can prepare a final list to make it a candidate for featured article again. So if you are from Nagercoil or have very good knowledge about Nagercoil. Be Bold and help Nagercoil to be a feature article. Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 04:36, 21 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Flora and Fauna edit

Though the district is still rich in flora and fauna, the town itself is losing its greenery and natural ambience due to rapid urbanization and pollution. The variety of plants and animals vary according to the distance from the town and the height of the area.

Common animals near the town (on the hills) include porcupines, hedgehogs, wild boars, monitor lizards, storks (several varieties), water hens, cranes and varieties of reptiles, including pythons and other snakes.

In Mahendragiri hills (about 4000 ft above sea level), one can find bucks, leopards, deer and leopard-cubs often stray onto the nearby highway and are sometimes run over by motorists.

Keeriparai and Maramalai, further away from the town, are habitats for wild elephants, bisons and Bears.

In the Theroor wetlands near the town, one can see several varieties of storks and migratory birds during specific seasons. Trouts are commonly found in the Pechiparai dam (lake).

The economy is influenced by the rubber production in the west of Kanyakumari district bordering Kerala. A variety of Plantains (known as Nenthiram palam, Chenthuluvan, Rasakathali, Palayamkotan, Thuluvam, Matti), Jack fruit (known as Varikila and Koolan), Mango (known as Alphonsa, Bangalora, Neelam and Ottu) and coconut add to the richness of the cultivated crops and plants of the district. In addition to the fruits, a variety of flowers like roses and jasmine are also produced. As a major trade centre, the fruits arrive at the market in vadasery in the town.

More than 200 species of marine fishes have been recorded in the coastal region of Kanyakumari district, which includes skates, rays, sharks, sardine, mackerel, etc. Apart from fishes different species of prawns, lobsters, crabs, bivalves, gastropods, cephalopods and turtles are seen in the catch.

Plants include several of varieties of medicinal plants near Nagercoil in the hillock of Maruthuvazmalai(the medicinal hill). Gardening is a big passion among the locals and some of the best varieties of plants are seen on display outside their houses. Common garden varieties include Crotons, Lillies, Dahlia, etc.

In areas like Keeriparai, one can see varieties of ferns and other tropical plants. At Pechipaarai, one comes across trees like 'Flame of the Forest', with its reddish and orange leaves and flowers, sparkling in an area of green cover.

Rubber estates are found in the hilly areas surrounding Arumanai, Kaliyal etc.

Notable Facts edit

The district has one of the highest doctor-to-person ratio in the country, among districts, which is also reflected in the town. It seems like there is a medical practitioner in every corner of the street.

Nagercoil is also famous for medicinal herbs and traditional medicine. The medicinal and other rare flora which grow in the surrounding hills (Western Ghats) is a botanist's delight. There are a number of traditional 'asaans' (traditional medical therapists and practitioners) in the town. The preparations of the herbal medicines and the practice are generally passed on from generation to generation and is a closely guarded trade secret.

Swamithope, the place where Ayya Vaikundar performed Tavam and the epi-center of the religion Ayyavazhi, is the place of congregation for the people of Ayyavazhi. The District is considered as a holy place by them ; and at the time of Vaikunda Avataram festival during March, the district is crowded with Ayyavazhi followers from different parts of India.

"Villupaatu", the Tamil musical way of reciting stories by artistes was once very popular and developed around the town - especially in the Thovaalai area, near the town. Even today, during temple festivals, Villupaatu performers sing through the night with Ramayana and other stories. Thovaalai is also a major centre for cultivation, trading and auctioning of flowers (Jasmine and other varieties) - a major portion of it goes to Kerala.

The great Roman Catholic missionary, St. Francis Xavier visited the town (Kottar) in the 16th century ; the place where he celebrated Mass is now a church (Cathedral) that bears his name.

Generally, one hears of 'white sands' on the beach - but there are a few places in the District, where one can see 'black sands' (with mineral content).

Places of Interest edit

The best option to cover all the tourist places in Kanyakumari district is to hire a taxi and take a round trip starting from Suchindrum-Kanyakumari and travel towards the north east and to the coastal area finally ending up in Kanyakumari (or) from north east towards the south. You will be impressed by the hospitality of the local people in the villages where most of the tourist spots are located. Nivus|(talk)|(desk) 06:14, 5 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Socio-Economic Factors & Local Economy edit

Though Nagercoil has a high educated populace, migration to big cities in India, the Gulf and Western countries from families is quite common, given the fact that the town has no big industry, but many well-educated youngsters. The remittances from relatives earning outside the town and abroad (many in white collar jobs), counts for a major difference in the socio-economic status of the town - as an indicator, land prices are comparable to a bigger city in Tamilnadu.

Kanyakumari District accounts for more than 95% of the production of natural rubber in the state of Tamilnadu. It ranks next to Kerala in rubber production and it is to be noted that India is the fourth largest producer of rubber in the world. The rubber produced in Kanyakumari district is of superior grade. In recent years, the advent of synthetic (artificial) rubber and cheaper rubber imports from Malaysia to India has brought down demand for the rubber produced here to some extent.

The area is a delight to watch, with thousands of blades of the tall wind-mills rotating in unison, as far as the eyes can see. Some of these wind-mills are the largest in Asia (in height of the tower, length of blades and electricity produced)

== Eating Out ==

Eating out is generally not for people of Nagercoil. It is said to be because it would mean that the woman of the house is irresponsible and hence the family has to eat outside. With the ever increasing popularity of parrotta shops along the corners of every locality, it is almost accepted as a staple dinner for many. Bharat Parotta stall, Banu Chicken Corner, Mano Parotta stall are among the best parotta shops in Nagercoil.

Eating out in restaurants is an emerging trend. It is due to the increasing number of the floating population. The Tsunami on December 2004, together with the Atomic Power Station being established by NPCIL at Koodangulam have increased the number of foreigners visiting the town. This brought in several new restaurants. Eating out is hence catching up.

Though fish is an every day food in Nagercoil, it is extremely difficult to find a restaurant serving fish curry in the local recipe.

== Bakery and Snack Foods ==

People in Nagercoil love bakery foods. Apart from the once popular Tops Biscuit Company and the Queens Bakery, Greatest Bakery, Swiss Bakery, Best Bakery, Cake World and others around every corner provide both local and western bakery and snack foods. Today the town makes some of the best of pastries and baked foods at extremely low prices.

Undoing purposeful mistake made by ip:59.96.23.65 to defame Nagercoil edit

IP 59.96.23.65 has replaced "city" with "village" throughout this article. I cant understand his/her intention in making 12th largest city of Tamil Nadu a "VILLAGE"!

To User at IP:59.96.23.65 Nagercoil is district head quarters of Kanyakumari district. It is one of the very ancient cities of Travancore region and was second largest city in Travancore(only after Trivandrum). Even after merger with Tamil Nadu it remains as an important city of this region. It is not a "village". antonylejos —Preceding undated comment added 14:12, 2 September 2011 (UTC).Reply

About removing Trivandrum Airport image & Malayalam translation edit

Hello Copperchloride, you have been continuously removing the image of Trivandrum international airport's image & the Malayalam translation from the article. As no airports are located in Nagercoil, the nearest and airport of interest for people in Nagercoil is Trivandrum Airport. So, what's bothering you from keeping that image? If some airport was there in Nagercoil, then the photo of that particular airport should be added, but in this case, there are none. So, it is valid to keep the photo of Trivandrum Airport. Nagercoil was initially part of Kerala, where Malayalam is spoken. While, Nagercoil is now parted from Kerala, there are still people in Nagercoil who speak Malayalam, and it can be considered as a Second language.... --JAaron95 | Talk | Contribs 10:37, 21 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Reply I have removed the airport's image guided by the notion that this a geographical article and images should represent the aspects of just the place and those of those places which have their own respective articles. Both Padmanabhapuram Palace and Trivandrum airport are not located in Nagercoil, and they are there in the article for the purpose of reference only. Hence having those images of places not in the city would only be misleading. None of the featured/good geographical articles have such anomalies, and that was my grouse. But regarding the Malayalam translation, Nagercoil was never a part of Kerala, but Travancore Kingdom from where it was separated during the States Reorganisation. The Tamil speaking region in the kingdom was given to Tamil Nadu as the Malayalam speaking parts of Travancore went to the state of Kerala. Tamil is the native language spoken. No evidence exists regarding Malayalam being spoken as a second language, if so, i welcome you to discuss them here. There are several outsiders in the town speaking various languages. If we were to include Malayalam, we must also add Kannada, Hindi and so on.--CuCl2 (chat spy acquaint) 17:17, 28 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Etymology edit

The page's "Etymology" section is not about etymology at all, this needs reworking. I suppose the name derives from "Naagar Kovil", "temple of the snake god"? Mbethke (talk) 12:33, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Mbethke, Agreed. "Koil" means temple and Simple English Wikipedia has this description: "Temple of Nagas". The ref there says the name is from derived from an old Jain temple called Naga Raja Temple (temple of the serpent king) - [5]. Don't know if that's reliable. But I think that's what the section should be about. Shanze1 (talk) 13:32, 15 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
