Racist abuse? edit

There is no record of any racist abuse by the fans of Rangers Football Club towards Momo Sylla. Simply a lie.

There's only two Momo Syllas edit

I removed the reference to Sylla having played for Ayr United. They did have a Mohammed Sylla on their books in the mid-90s, but the date and place of birth given were different. --Jellyman 09:48, 26 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Ha! There's only two Momo Syllas - was going to write the very same thing! Somebody had added the details of Sekou Momo Sylla, the Ayr Utd version, to the infobox. I have removed them now and added a note to the article. Caledonian Place 01:36, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
sorry to disappoint you guys, but momo sylla did in fact play for Ayr!! he was there for 3 months in 1997. he also played for le mans.

the soccerbase profile that is linked to on this page, even states this!! yet for some reason people won't believe it...

can you find reference to this other Sylla anywhere? i have googled him, and found a sekou sylla who was a referee's assistant...

have re-added the info about ayr and le mans, as i have definite references that he DID play for both teams. the swindontown.rivals site i posted above has squads for the 90's and there is no other mention of a Sylla playing for them. if you can prove this other guy played for ayr, then show me references! Geeness 14:57, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Show you the references! Now there's a challenge. Well I can't speak for Jellyman but my initial reference was the Scottish Football League's Review 1997-98. It's listing of the Ayr United squad contains:
Sekou Mohammed Sylla, born 22 Feb 1971 in Conakry, Guinea. Signed 2/9/97 from FC Martigues, a forward.
It seems he used his middle name instead of his given name, in the same way as Charles Richard Gough has. Armed with this information I was able to find these references to the player:
Gordon Dalziel brought in another foreign trialist, this time in the imposing form of Mohammed Syla (sic), who came from the French First Division having spent 6 years with Willem II Tilburg in the Dutch League.
The one L in Sylla is a typo as the rest of the article refers to him as Sylla. If this were to be the Celtic/Killie Momo Sylla he would have been playing first division football at the age of 14. It also contradicts the sourced element of the wiki article about Sylla playing for Cretiel at that age.
  • An Ajax fan's history site, showing a Mohammed Sylla in a line-up in the 94-95 season for a Willem II vs Ajax match. There are several other Dutch pages but Google doesn't seem to translate Dutch to English, so they are of limited use.
  • l'Humanite.fr containing an injury report for French clubs for the fixtures of the weekend 15/9/95. The translation is pretty poor but in the Martigues section it is discernible that a striker named Mohammed Sylla is out for three weeks with an ankle injury.
  • African International matches, 1994 at RSSSF. This shows a Mohammed Sylla scoring for the Guinea national side in 1994, when the Celtic/Killie version was a 17 year old just starting out with Creteil. Interestingly his middle name is given as Ofei, potentially a third Mohammed Sylla or just a name not normally used?
  • player profile on the official Kilmarnock site. This makes no reference to Ayr or Le Mans but does show Celtic/Killie Sylla playing for Le Harve during the 1998-99 season when he was purported to be playing for Le Mans, according to the sources you list above.
As for your references, the Honestpage (Why on earth is it at a swindontown.rivals address?) only confirms that a Mohammed Sylla played for Ayr during the 1997-98 season, but not which one. Both the 4thgame.com and the Scotland on Sunday articles claim that the Celtic/Killie Sylla is the same man who played for Ayr, in contradiction to my claim. However, one issue I would highlight with them is that they are both written several years after the event (2002 for the SoS article and at least 2003 for the 4thegame article) and represent secondary sources, drawn either from the author's memory or from a background search similar to that which we have undertaken.
From the above I think we can both agree that 1.a Mohammed Sylla did play for Ayr United and 2.there is more than one Guinean player by the name of Mohammed Sylla. I would hope that the primary, contemporary nature of two sources in particular, McClelland's match report and the SFL Review would convince you that the Sylla at Ayr was not the later Celtic/Killie player, although I am not convinced which, if not both, of the Syllas played with Le Mans. Death Notice Ceartas 15:55, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

I have removed the death notice for Momo Sylla. The player who died 2010-06-09 was one of the other Syllas, Mohamed (Socra) Sylla. Sylla Saga edit

Should have looked here before typing that long spiel above. A career history of the other Mohammed Sylla including time at Ayr United. It transpires he didn't play for Le Mans after all. The Celtic/Killie version at the same site. Caledonian Place 08:04, 8 July 2007 (UTC)Reply
