Claims edit

The info about "First asian" or "first person" is dubious. Brojen Das of erstwhile Pakistan (now Bangladesh) crossed the English channel on 18 August, 1958. See the Banglapedia article. Thanks. --Ragib 00:59, 10 June 2006 (UTC).Reply

Please note in WIKIPEDIA that Mihir Sen is referred to as the FIRST INDIAN and not "Asian" or "first person" to swim across the English Channel. Please check your facts before posting these incorrect statements. (Supriya Sen, daughter of Mihir Sen). 2 July 2014

The article has been revised and references put in. -- P.K.Niyogi 06:21, 9 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

It is only natural that as more information on Mihir Sen becomes available that the Wikipedia document should be revised to accommodate these details. As long as the information is based on facts there should be no problem.

Palk Strait, a distance of 33-50 miles, stretches from Point Pedro to Point Calimere. Mihir Sen swam from Urumunai, a village in Talaimannar to Danushkodi, called Palk Bay, only a distance of 23 miles. See Sports - vehicle for promoting good relations. Murugupillai Navaratnasamy crossed the Palk Strait (36 miles) on 25 March 1954. See [1]. Thanks.--Kanags (talk) 10:53, 25 May 2014 (UTC)Reply

THE DISPUTE HERE IS THE FOLLOWING: There is no formal record of Murugupillai Navaratnasamy crossing the Palk Strait. Mihir Sen however was accompanied by the Indian Navy (I.N.S. Sukanya and I.N.S.Sharda) despatched by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to formally record and navigate the swim. As stated in the Hindu Sport Sunday (May 24th, 2004) quote 'Bengal's Mihir Sen was the first Indian to swim the Palk strait in 1966. A few more have successfully "crossed" the channel though timings and records are not readily available here.' (Supriya Sen, daughter of Mihir Sen). 2 July 2014
