I made a redirect because of the poor translation of the term "Медаль «За отвагу»". I was told (quite politely, thank you for that) I should've asked for, and waited for a concensus. My apologies, I was honestly unaware of this. I saw an error and wanted to fix it. It's never too late to take one's finger out of one's eye. If many disagree, I can change it all back. Please take the following into consideration:

Many people use E-translators and often settle for the word that best matches their interpretation according to their mother tongue or national awards' system, they too often settle for a synonym. The "Medal of Valor" is an American medal, "За" means "for", not "of", at a minimum, it should've originally been called the "Medal For Valor".
Synonyms are good, but IMHO not preferable, especially when dealing in specific degrees. All will agree (I hope) there are subtil differences between Valor, Courage and Bravery.
My years of research into Soviet and Russian ODMs and my knowledge (albeit imperfect) of the Russian language point me to these translations: valour = доблесть, courage = отвага/мужество, bravery = мужество/храбрость, valiance = храбрость.
Example - It is called the "Medal For Courage" in the Soviet awards article.
Example - It is called Medal for bravery/courage on the other languages on Wiki (Polish, French...)
Examples - Both the MVD and EMERCOM medals Медаль «За отвагу на пожаре» translate into Medal "For Courage in a Fire".
Many believed it to be the highest Soviet award simply due to its description "...highest medal a soldier...", highest medal yes, but not highest award, there were and still are decorations and orders for bravery/courage/valour above it.

-Yeah, don't bet the farm on translations found on Russian web sites. I spend 20+ hours a week on Russian governmental web sites, they use E-translators 95% of the time. Some translations are absolutely pittiful! Fdutil (talk) 22:29, 5 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Fdutil has some knowledge on this (which should be spread around), so I would accept the wording change. I would quibble whether the " should be included (ie Medal "For Courage" (Russia) or Medal for Courage (Russia)). The original Russian includes quote marks but practice elsewhere in English wiki has been to omit them (eg Medal for Combat Service (Russian: Медаль "За боевые заслуги"), Medal "For the Victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War 1941–1945" (Russian: Медаль «За Победу над Германией в Великой Отечественной войне 1941—1945 гг.») and others) Folks at 137 (talk) 11:29, 6 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
