Copyright problem removed edit

Prior content in this article duplicated one or more previously published sources. The material was copied from: https://www.legacy.com/obituaries/washingtonpost/obituary.aspx?pid=189368853. Copied or closely paraphrased material has been rewritten or removed and must not be restored, unless it is duly released under a compatible license. (For more information, please see "using copyrighted works from others" if you are not the copyright holder of this material, or "donating copyrighted materials" if you are.)

For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or published material; such additions will be deleted. Contributors may use copyrighted publications as a source of information, and, if allowed under fair use, may copy sentences and phrases, provided they are included in quotation marks and referenced properly. The material may also be rewritten, providing it does not infringe on the copyright of the original or plagiarize from that source. Therefore, such paraphrased portions must provide their source. Please see our guideline on non-free text for how to properly implement limited quotations of copyrighted text. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously, and persistent violators will be blocked from editing. While we appreciate contributions, we must require all contributors to understand and comply with these policies. Thank you. John of Reading (talk) 06:36, 5 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Vnoahpe, a WP-article on any topic is meant to be a summary of what reliably published, independent sources has written, and to cite these sources. Copypasting large amounts of text from elsewhere is not the way we do it. Do you see that the text you included fits WP very poorly, including style issues like having "passed away" near the top? WP doesn't have obituaries, that is not what this place is for. This doesn't mean that some of what you included can't be used, but what are the sources? On WP, personal knowledge is not good enough, neither are unpublished documentation. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:11, 17 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thank you - I donate my copy wright material. Is there something I need to reflect on the page to show that? Vnoahpe (talk) 05:35, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Vnoahpe: When I looked at the Washington Post's obituary section yesterday, the entries were marked "By <author name>" but "Copyright Washington Post". I think this means the copyright release would have to be made by someone at the Washington Post; the instructions at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials contain the line If you are the original author but the rights have been assigned to your publisher, you have given up the ability to license the work to us. The page Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials also explains the procedures for making the copyright release. A declaration by you on this talk page or in the article will not be sufficient. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:48, 18 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

I did not give up the right to the original but, fear not, the wiki posting is materially changed from what I created for my father and, uncles vandalized, will continue to edit it picking up on formatting examples of his peers and more recent deceased Generals from all services. I hope that we can converse before any edits or deletions that you may feel compelled to make. Thank you. Van Noah Vnoahpe (talk) 00:15, 19 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
