real name

There are rumours and schoolmate witnesses that her real name is Maassama Khatoon or Mumtaz Khatun. Is that after her father had died and mother changed religion (remarriage?) or is the lineage of the parents name made up and was she born a Muslim? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.89.59.69 (talk) 12:13, 28 April 2014 (UTC)

controversy

Ms Mamta Banerjee is the most anarchist person India has every seen. How can one be neutral while talking about her.

Vinay —Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.93.14.97 (talk) 09:37, 6 April 2009 (UTC)

Mamata Banerjee herself revealed in her memoir that her actual age is 5 years less than what was originally believed. So she should be 52 years old and not 57. Can this be updated? http://ibnlive.in.com/news/mamata-5-years-younger-than-her-official-age/224172-37-64.html 75.38.217.66 (talk) 20:54, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

Neutral point of view

The tone and point of view do not conform to what is expected in an encyclopedia article. Did this person ever do anything positive or perform constituent services while in government service? These actions should be mentioned. The words tantrums and scribbled could be toned down to controversial actions and hastily written, for example. ~ Chris the speller 17:14, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

Exactly my thoughts. I wrote a section on her service during her tenure as Railway Minister. The article in whole still sounds POV regardless of how one thinks of Ms. Banerjee.--Antorjal 17:49, 7 September 2006 (UTC)

Please do not add libelous/slanderous material. Even if you are logged in anonymously, your IP will be recorded. Constructive critism is encouraged but slander is unacceptable. Thanks. --Antorjal 21:20, 20 September 2006 (UTC)

The article appears balanced to me (a disinterested American) thanks to everyone's previous efforts, and I have gone ahead and removed the POV tag. Both sides of the coin are well-represented: the top of the article lists her accomplishments, and the Criticism section gives her critics a forum to point out her fiery character and inconsistency. As an editorial preference I removed all the "[citation needed]" tags attached to each critism in the section because there's a flag for the whole section -- we should have one or the other, but not both (and stylistically I prefer a single warning). I agree the criticisms need references, and I don't oppose removing any that can't be supported by a clear reference. Perhaps the person who constructed the criticism section can annotate them. I also did some copyediting throughout the article, I hope the net result is for the better. -- technopilgrim 09:30, 17 October 2006 (UTC)

I originally edited the article a while back, when I was looking up Mamta and realized that the whole thing sounded like someone's poorly written article. I kept the 'outbursts' section because the incidents did take place, but I don't think they are absolutely necessary. --Rahulpat 16:41, 19 November 2006 (UTC)

I edited this article again to highlight her opposition to industry. I have a lot of respect for wikipedia's standards but to be honest this woman is not much different from a extortionist. I am sure you may be a little opposed to this article sounding a little biased but certainly the articles regarding Hitler and Bin Laden have their bit of biasness as well. This woman is not like them but she is a tyrant and living under her rule is horrible. So please do not re-edit this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.194.226.22 (talk) 07:34, 3 September 2008 (UTC)

I agree with you. While writing an article on Hitler, how can you maintain NPOV. I think the author tried his best to keep the article neutral. He has mostly not touched her connections with Kamtapuri, Naxal and Gorkhaland terrorists which is known by large number of people in bengal. Nothing has been mentioned about her modus operandi of going into conflict with police and causing bloodshed before the Durgapuja festival to mobilise people against the state government, as proven by Nandigram and Charu market incident in two consecutive years. Also nothing has been mentioned about widespread belief that she has accepted 300 crores from Mr. Rahul Bajaj to stall TATA. Its important that all this gets recorded for sake of recordkeeping. But may be that would not be approved by wiki policies. Please suggest how these can be captured in the article being within the wikipedia policies. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 124.124.6.149 (talk) 16:07, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

This article is not biased. If you call a bad person, a bad person than you are not being prejudiced. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.41.71.221 (talk) 05:47, 12 November 2008 (UTC)

Guys, I am not into politics.I do not support or hate any party. Just a quick commnent. I have seen quite a bit of "negative" comments being posted by Annons.Every view point is respected, why shy of posting under your own name. Cheers. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Praadipto (talkcontribs) 20:50, 23 March 2009 (UTC)

Ok praadipto,to be very frank Mamta banerjee is very much comparable to Tuglag ,"the whimscal ruler".Once i was a great fan of her.But its her own policies that thrown her out of her own people. Her only target is to be the chief minister of bengal. For that she has been constantly changing her ideology. One more thing who ever have written this topic on Mamta banerjee forgot to mention the Controversies about her. Were those intensionally avoided. If so , the nuetrality of the writer and the topic should be questioned —Preceding unsigned comment added by cheenangshuk (talkcontribs) (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.36.134.224 (talk)

2008 Tata dispute

Someone should add a section dealing with this subject. It built on the Nandigram action and led to the 2009 election success.

Though i've a deep respect for unbiasedness of wikipedia contents,i found a few topics regarding Ms.Mamata banerjee as though those have been made CTRL C + CTRL V from some news paper or leaflets distributed by CPIM in West Bengal. So finally wikipedia also could not escape being the victim of omnivorous scheudo communism!! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 203.197.96.50 (talk) 10:33, 4 June 2009 (UTC)

I think that since the Tata Dispute over the Singur Land involved death and subsequent requests by Banerjee to re utilize the Tata plant area for the railway industry while a railway minister does indicate the article has a lack of information. Although I do not presently possess the knowledge of how to properly follow guidelines, not having read all the editing guidelines, I can say that many articles have a controversy section regarding people and that may be appropriate. Of course this was a controversy and not reporting this does a disservice to readers of wikipedia. A non-biased opinion may be difficult to gather in this instance but it should at least be reported as to the facts that happened. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.22.143.50 (talk) 04:31, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

The policy is that no information goes into the articles without providing a reliable source for that information. If you have information and a source, then add it to the article without marking it as controversial. Then, if sources disagree, or your source seems like it might be biased or unreliable, someone else can mark it as controversial and discuss it here. Blue Rasberry 13:52, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

In this context i just wanted to add that Mamata Banerjee, whatever she did, she did it only for herself and her vote bank/her producers to stop industrialization in west bengal in the time of Left Govt. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Victor8389 (talkcontribs) 18:00, 30 May 2011 (UTC)

There are three sources regarding the conflict that seem impartial and contain a timeline of the events. Though not complete, they are accurate.

Bengali: বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়

"Bengali: বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়" is not "Banerjee". I'm a native speaker of both and I can tell you that for fact. Anyway, what should we do about this? The Bengali Wikipedia writes Bengali: বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায়, but people in West Bengal use Banerjee. She isn't married, so that can't be the reason. InMooseWeTrust (talk) 12:48, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

This happens often. In cases where the English name is not the same as the actual name, on English Wikipedia use the English name. See WP:ENGLISH for the rationale. On the Bengali Wikipedia, use the actual name. Blue Rasberry 13:54, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Fake Doctorate Degree

Fake doctorate degree is a fact and over 4000 reults come up during a search in google mamata banerjee fake degree. A fact is a fact and cannot be overlooked in Wikipedia due to somebody's convenience. Some sycophant is deleting records relating to fake degree.

In fact Time of India reported recently that Mamata banerjee is one of the few politicians in India who uses or used fake degrees. 59.93.218.83 (talk) 13:35, 6 October 2010 (UTC)

Some sycophant is deleting edits rearding to this fake degree. This should,b eprevented. 59.93.202.102 (talk) 14:49, 13 October 2010 (UTC)

Surprising that the article still overlooks this fact. Moreover, considering the citation in reference [16] in original article still shows her (fake) doctorate degree, it cannot be held as a credible source of information regarding her educational background — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.38.217.66 (talk) 20:42, 19 May 2012 (UTC)

I think it is a very important fact as it sheds light on the backgound of the politician. We should include it in as there are ciatation to support this fact. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.223.231.145 (talk) 15:35, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

Mamata Banerjee’s Birthplace

Mamata Banerjee was born in Kolkata and not in Kusumba, Birbhum as it is stated here. See here (Lok Sabha website). Kusumba is merely her maternal uncle’s village. This information should be corrected. --Jonoikobangali (talk) 17:26, 31 May 2011 (UTC)

Paintings

Dheeraj Akula (talk) 10:15, 9 June 2011 (UTC) I think we should also include about her paintings. Mamata Banerjee also does abstract paintings. Some of her artwork were on sale to raise funds for her 2011 assembly elections. [1]

Controversy section: This article or section may be slanted towards recent events

On the controversy section it says: This article or section may be slanted towards recent events. Please try to keep recent events in historical perspective. (June 2012)

All the events are not new as they have been in the media for a very long time. Thus they are in accordance with wikipedia guidelines so I propose we remove this tag — Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.223.231.145 (talk) 20:16, 22 September 2012 (UTC)

The history of attempts on her life

The article does not mention the many attempts on her life while she was in the opposition, during the left rule. At least once, she suffered a severe fracture in her head and spent many months in hospital. This was due to a CPIM or its affiliated association member attacking her with an iron rod. At that point she was a sitting Member of the Parliament, as far as I recall. Another instance was a bullet grazing the arm of a woman sitting next to her. All these attempts happened when she was in the opposition in the state, and the Left Front coalition was in the State Government. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 13thSentinel (talkcontribs) 04:31, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Citations and Statements are at odds

I checked some of the cited sources, and they don't match the text mentioned here, often they are at odds with the mentioned sentences. It seems to me many of the editors are not following the rules of fairness in citing documents. They cite something, and write something else. Many statements are opinionated, highly biased, and don't follow the citations mentioned at all. I think this article requires a lot of cleanup.

A few examples: citation no. 100 is a broken link it seems. 99 is clearly not a 'news piece', as it cites the grapevine for its conclusions.

There is the following: "Mamata didi gave her party support to Pranab Mukherjee for the post of President of India after a long drama over the issue, She also said" she was personally a "great fan" of Mukherjee and wished he grows from strength to strength". The article cited in 74, actually quotes Renuka Chowdhury saying these lines, and not Mamata Banerjee. This looks like a manipulation of truth. I hope that this is an unintended mistake. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 13thSentinel (talkcontribs) 05:46, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

There is a line "In 2000, she and Ajit Kumar Panja resigned to protest the hike in petroleum prices,[29] and then withdrew their resignations without any reason." The article cited no. 30 actually investigates and concludes that there were deeper political reasons than it may seem on the surface, behind her actions. This is definitely not what is being stated here. The cited article is here: http://www.tribuneindia.com/2000/20001009/nation.htm#1 — Preceding unsigned comment added by 13thSentinel (talkcontribs) 05:30, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

I corrected the statement which cites no. 58. The statement previously quoting the person is very different from what is stated in the news article cited.

Citation no. 74 cites CPIM party workers being arrested with weapons and equipment used by police. But, the statements which cite this state different things. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 13thSentinel (talkcontribs) 05:55, 13 August 2013 (UTC)

Many of the citations are OP-ED pieces which often contain personal opinions of the authors, often controversial, and much of the contents may not be objective truth as expected in such citations. SO, I am not sure if such OP-ED pieces can be cited here. This is a question I ask this community.

Neutrality of this artcile

Going through this article, it seems, this was overtly critical of the leader and was trying to malign her image. Every positive aspect mentioned was referenced while the negative ones do not have any reference at all. Inappropriate adjectives were frequently used (like 'mercurial' et.) that defies every norm of biography writing. Also, it doesn't highlight her achievements the data of which is available on-line.

The article needs to be more neutral, should accommodate more references and needs to be reworked. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.177.9.137 (talk) 12:51, 19 April 2014 (UTC)

Purely one sided article probably written by someone staunch Left front Supporter. She always commended votes of at least 30% people of West Bengal and MP from one of the constituency with highest concentration of well educated and literate people in w.Bengal. This feat cannot be achieved by a person as been described here.

Controversial

It does not seem necessary to include controversial details related to the Saradha group scam in the Early Life and Education section. There seems to an issue with NPOV for the article as a result. I attempted to shift the section of the article which addressed some of her paintings being linked to the scam to the Saradha group section under Controversies where the rest of the details related to it are present as well as copyediting the presentation of those details. The details regarding the link between the scam and her painting are not relevant to her early life or to her education. The revertions made thereafter allege that sourced material was removed which wasn't. So unless there's any other objection I'd like to carry out with the appropriate edits to address the issue mentioned.Pali Upadhyay (talk) 12:09, 30 April 2019 (UTC)

@Pali Upadhyay: Probably you are right. I believe the 'controversies' should not be in the 'Early life' section since we have a separate section for that. I'd also suggest that the text, "Mamta Banerjee's 300 paintings were sold for ₹9crore" be moved to the 'Controversy' section since it is directly related to the Sharda scam. - Fylindfotberserk (talk) 14:11, 1 May 2019 (UTC)
