Stop merging the Shib Sibs' pages!

edit

The Shibutanis are INDIVIDUAL ice dancers. One would not make a merged page for an entire Olympic-medal winning sports team, and other ice dancers don't have such an unnecessary page merge. As for previous versions, this is Maia Shibutani's original page. This can easily be noted with the various language translations available at the side of the page. Maia and Alex are SEPARATE individuals.

I agree with this. I think the initial merge was a well-intentioned good-faith bold move, but now that it's been reverted, please don't keep forcing it without opening a discussion and reaching a consensus per WP:MERGEINIT. TJRC (talk) 16:08, 18 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
Is there somewhere that I should post this question for a wider discussion? I had previously opened a discussion at Talk:Alex_Shibutani#Merger_proposal, but we only had 3 participants, with 1 "strong support" and two "opposes". I had also opened a discussion here at the Figure Skating Wikiproject, with limited participation (from the same "strong support" user). With no clear consensus either way, I did a bold merge.
In support of my change, there is the Torvill and Dean article, which is about their team, and so I believe these the Shibutanis could have a single article to avoid duplicate information. From doing a diff on the Maia and the Alex articles, they were essentially the same article, with a few minor differences. The other potential issue is that any ice dance updates on the Alex page would have to be copied over to the Maia page, which could potentially cause these pages to get out of sync.
On a separate note, I noticed that Lilydog945 has reverted my changes for the Meryl Davis and Charlie White (figure skater) pages - I had created a ice dance team page called Davis and White which was modeled after the Torvill and Dean article. I did not merge those two pages together as I did here, but split out their ice dance career into a different article. Can someone else chime in whether they think those changes are okay? For starters, Torvill and Dean is a TOTALLY different ice dance team. They are more of a cultural icon, hence their names ALWAYS being said together. Only real figure skating fans refer to ice dance teams in the same way, not the general public. And again, with that logic, every single ice dance team should have the same "merged" page. It's completely unnecessary. Do NOT make such "bold" changes to figure skating articles without depth of how the figure skating community refers to ice dance and pairs teams. And oh god – NEVER try anything like this with the pairs teams.
And also, your strong support came right after the 2018 Olympics. Since then, Maia has been diagnosed with a tumor, and the team is thought to have retired. They are going on separate paths now, warranting individual pages now more than ever. Lilydog945
Is there somewhere that I should bring this up to the "figure skating community" then? I don't know about the cultural icon part for Torvill and Dean, but I have always heard this team referred to as the "Shib Sibs", and so they are also always a team. I posted on the talk page and the Figure Skating Wikproject and there was a merge proposal on the pages for 2 years with limited participation from anyone. I agree that this should not be done with pairs teams. Natg 19 (talk) 04:50, 19 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
I have started an RfC here for a wider discussion. Natg 19 (talk) 00:36, 20 September 2020 (UTC)Reply
