Talk:MG Motor

Latest comment: 1 year ago by Warren Whyte in topic Confused article

This article is a mess. speculation, opinion, comparisons that are inappropriate a la "Escort Sized" and MG5...evokes the MGB" The MG5 has no MGB styling cues or throwback nods other than the octagon logo. Someone needs to put some real effort into this thread. 24.22.147.151 (talk) 05:25, 7 October 2016 (UTC)— Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.22.147.151 (talk) 05:23, 7 October 2016 (UTC)Reply

Does this article warrant semi-protection? edit

It seems like every couple days, some IP address comes along and 'helpfully' edits this article asserting that MG Motor is a Chinese — not British, brand.

This, despite a well-sourced and perfectly established reality to the contrary.

Would semi-protection be warranted? --No coffee, please. (talk) 20:53, 24 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

Why are the models not up-to-date? edit

Specifically, why does it say the MG5 is a petrol-powered hatchback or a petrol-powered sedan, when in reality it is an electric (BEV) estate car? And why does it mention the MG One, which is not available in the UK AFAIK? There may be other examples but it seems the page is confused about what products are sold by this UK company. (PS FWIW, the first paragraph about the ownership etc seems perfectly reasonable today 2021-12-27) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.97.62.77 (talk) 20:47, 27 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

OK, here goes:
1. Wikipedia is global, not UK-centric, so models will vary accordingly
2. Wikipedia content is created by volunteer contributors - there's no compulsion on anyone
3. Wikipedia is not a news organisation
4. Wikipedia content is based on, and dependent upon, press reports and other published sources. Content should not contain the thoughts of any individual. Normally, content is determined and displayed appropriately by people who have an interest in/knowledge of the particular topic.
5. If you can demonstrate any shortcomings or errors by showing the published basis(es), then please annotate it in this Talk section under a separate heading.
6. I don't have any knowledge of modern MGs; I only have this on my Watchlist as a few years ago I parked near to one and chatted to the driver. This was repeated a couple of months ago, when the (then)new owner showed me MG3, stating it was based on an out-of-production small Rover (25?).

The EV is mentioned at Roewe i5.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 03:48, 28 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

Confused article edit

The article can't decide if it is just about the UK subsidiary, or about MG Motor and its international scope. There would be benefit from further tidying up to recognise this as a global marque of SAIC, with a presence in a variety of countries, and could have a UK section or as India has done, develop a UK only page which might be of interest to UK readers given the more complicated history post collapse of MG Rover in Longbridge. Looks like we still have confusion over MG as a marque and MG and its UK specific operations. I would propose that this article is evolved into a more international perspective and have sections for market specific elements. Warren (talk) 14:18, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Warren Whyte, I agree that the article needs a complete rework, but I'm not sure what it should cover. I think it was originally written to cover the new company created in the UK by Nanjing Automobile Corporation (NAC), to sell Chinese-built MGs and to build MG TFs in the UK. It was never intended to cover the manufacture of MG-branded cars elsewhere though. That UK venture was short-lived though, and a lot of water has passed under the MG bridge since then. Clearly this article has little value now, although I think MG Motor UK still exists as a purely British company, but now only sells cars and no longer manufactures them.
Who builds MGs these days - is it SAIC (in the same way that BMW builds Minis in BMW-named plants) or is there a subsidiary or subsidiaries with "MG" in their name(s) that build them? And in which countries are they built?
I guess we need some good sources detailing the history of MG-branded vehicles since NAC bought the tools and the brand name (but they never got hold of the old MG Car Company itself). -- DeFacto (talk). 15:45, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
There is an argument to keep this a UK page as the UK story is quite specific, and there is already a MG India page, but to keep the China and other international topics on the SAIC page who builds all the cars and owns the marque. Warren (talk) 17:16, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
