The details

The one major impediment one will meet in expanding this article is the absence of sheer biographical data. We have commentary to last us a lifetime, but it one would be hard-pressed in trying to source where he was born, or what schools he graduated from, or pretty much anything before he reached the age of 50). Well, there is a Cotidianul article rendered here, where some detail on his early years is provided (by Boia himself), but it's quite vague. Dahn 08:15, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

"In rest, sint la Universitatea din Bucuresti, unde sint si de gasit. Sint foarte de gasit in Romania." That's funny. Then why not spend an hour, and put up a decent personal web page, with bare-minimum info? Sorry, but that's a pet peeve of mine. In the Anglo-Saxon countries, that's a given. When it comes to French academics, they have something, but their html sucks. And, when it comes to mioritic space, well, it's a void, or just about. Maybe they should Get a Mac? Maybe the people managing the site were trying to reach him in France :). Dahn 13:33, 3 December 2007 (UTC)Reply
I found an interesting statement of his, of the kind "I was suggested to enter the party, which I would have not done by own initiative. But it turned out to be a positive influence, since I would not have been able to have such a carreer in history otherwise!" THIS sounds like a confession of the fact that the basis of his career was under Ceausescu, where he learned what he then became an expert in criticising.
One way or an other, we should make a point of the fact that this person is a novelist and not a historian. He is not known to have revealed information, just speculations. There is a recent interview of his, where he refers to the territorial losses of Romania after WW2 as "some teritorries with unsignificant romanian population". This covers Bessarabia, Bucovina - areas were real ethnic cleansing, massacres and deportations of hundred thousands took place. I would love, for fairness, to see this quatation here, to show the type of man he is. Since he is controversed, some people may like this kind of affirmation and find it exciting cynicism.
This is the quote: "Bun, s-au pierdut teritorii locuite de populaţie neromânească, cum ar fi Bucovina de Nord, Basarabia, Cadrilaterul"

Boia is not controversial among mainstream historians, he is controversial among pseudohistorians because his WP:N is mainly due to being a debunker of pseudohistory. Of course they hate him for spilling the beans about their chauvinistic phantasms.
He is pretty much like Michael Shermer, who is mostly known for his defense of rational skepticism and as a debunker of pseudoscience.
I'll grant you that Boia's specialism isn't Ancient or Medieval history. His specialism is how other historians write. And he wrote trade books unmasking Dacianism.
And it is true that he does not kowtow to nationalistic propaganda. He does not speak as a politician who represents the national interest of Romania, he speaks sine ira et studio. It's not his job to do national propaganda. The job of historians is to objectively research the past, not produce propaganda. They will doubt whatever can reasonably be doubted. And since the evidence for the origins of Romanians is rather scarce, it will seriously be doubted. He grants that archaeology has shown a continuity of population on the territory of present-day Romania, but not a continuity of population speaking a Daco-Roman language. Since that's beyond what archaeology can show. tgeorgescu (talk) 20:15, 25 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
