The Hitchcock decision mentions the Lone Wolf of the complaint filing an affidavit in 1901. But the Kiowa exhibit at the Smithsonian, put together by Arvo Mikkanen in 2001, states that it was Chief Lone Wolf and not some other Lone Wolf that filed the suit.

Also present in the exhibit is an original document from the National Archives signed by Lone Wolf in 1892.

The exhibit also has a very large photograph of Lone Wolf. It is not the same photo as here, but it is the same man.

So something is messed up somewhere, either Chief Lone Wolf lived longer than is thought, or it was some other, also very famous Chief Lone Wolf in the Hitchcock decision. Xj 04:39, 23 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

OK, I discussed this with a tribal historian in Oklahoma. Some of this is covered in "Kiowa Voices: Myths, Legends, Folktales". I also found information here: http://famous.adoption.com/famous/lone-wolf-ii.html, which cites "Clark, Blue. Lone Wolf v. Hitchcock: Treaty Rights and Indian Law at the End of the Nineteenth Century", which would seem to be the definitive reference on this subject!

There are several Lone Wolfs. The first Lone Wolf as a boy lived with wolves after an incident, and later rejoined the tribe, taking the name.

Lone Wolf (d 1879) of this wiki article had a son who was killed, but whose body was retrieved by a friend. Here is more about him: http://www.tsha.utexas.edu/handbook/online/articles/LL/flo9_print.html

Because of these acts, the friend, Mamadayte, was sort of adopted and received Lone Wolf's war shield and name upon his death. He became Chief Lone Wolf II in 1879, and remained so until 1896. This was the Lone Wolf that brought the Hitchcock suit. Mamadayte is nowadays spelled Momaday.

His gravestone says 1843-1923 as birth to death.

Later, after Lone Wolf II died, DeLos Lone Wolf, Lone Wolf's nephew attained prominence and was the last with the name Lone Wolf.

Probably there's enough to split the article into multiple articles now, or at least separate ones for Lone Wolf I and Lone Wolf II and link between them.
