Black flag in sailing edit

Why does flying a black flag in sailing disqualify the participant from future regattas for several years?? Dbutler1986 (talk) 17:53, 3 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

List? edit

I think this article should be delistified; it would be better as an article about the concept of black flag in general (with an accompanying list) then simply a list of black flags. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 03:53, 14 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

Add the ISIS flag to this article? edit

There is another Wiki article on this subject. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Standard — Preceding unsigned comment added by TheEditorJones (talkcontribs) 21:03, 24 June 2015 (UTC)Reply

List of black flagsList of meanings of black flags – the List of flags by color has a section that has an actual list of flags where black is one of the flag's colors; this article is about meanings of black flags; it doesn't list the flags themselves. • Oppose It's not uncommon to have an article called List of X which lists things of type X, along with some context about each instance (especially if the entity doesn't have an article to link to). For example List of individual dogs (which should not be renamed to List of biographies of individual dogs). The article differs from List_of_flags_by_color#Black_(Sable) because the latter lists flags which contain any amount of black (which seems questionably useful, but whatever), whereas List of black flags lists flags which are mostly or entirely black. Proposed title is a step backward with respect to naturalness and conciseness. Colin M (talk) 22:30, 1 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Move to List of primarily black flags: The suggested name might imply that this is only about what are the meanings of flags that are entirely black, such that the only difference between the flags is their meaning, but most of the flags discussed in the article are not entirely black. My suggested name would be more accurate. —BarrelProof (talk) 15:16, 10 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  •   Relisting note the new suggestion by BarrelProof should be considered too --DannyS712 (talk) 20:33, 18 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

List of black flagsList of primarily black flags – Most of the flags discussed in the article are not entirely black. My suggested name would thus be more accurate. Nobody responded when I made this suggestion 19 days ago. This time, if nobody responds, the article will be moved to my suggested title. —BarrelProof (talk) 05:37, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • Oppose As less natural and concise. I appreciate the argument for the move, but I don't see a significant risk of confusion. For example, people commonly refer to Barney as a "purple dinosaur", even though technically he's mostly purple, with a green belly. Or if you see a shirt that's mostly red, with some trim or an applique in another colour, it would still be natural to call it a "red shirt". Colin M (talk) 06:56, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose as per User:Colin M. Article titles need to balance accuracy against conciseness, without being pedantic, and the existing title does the job better than the proposed one. Ingratis (talk) 11:54, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per above. --Comment by Selfie City (talk about my contributions) 21:50, 29 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

"Black flags are often associated with funerals in the West" edit

Can someone provide a source for this claim is in the "In society" section? As someone who would typically be classified as a "Westerner", the only time I've ever seen a black flag used that way is when viewing the image there. Glades12 (talk) 09:43, 12 August 2020 (UTC)Reply
