Merge candidate? edit

I have not added a merge tag to this, but I will shortly unless there is some pressing need to keep this article separate from the other album sales lists out there.

The only list that is really relevant is the first one (1991-2006), as the others are incomplete versions, with the same start date but earlier ending dates. If the other lists are eliminated, I can't think of a reason the list should not be moved over to the main List_of_best-selling_albums_in_the_United_States entry.

Since nobody has objected, I have placed a merge tag on the article. I'll wait the requisite 10 days and merge the page, deleting all of the lists except for the 1991-2006 list.

If you intend to merge the two articles, then as per the meaning of the word 'merge', combine the details of both articles, not just blatantly remove researched data. The information is of significant interest showing the yearly change in the top ten albums. This data is not recorded elsewhere on the net. Actually, I discovered (quite by accident) that the article Nielsen Soundscan contains a better list for the 1991-2006 period, covering the top 20 albums. I will remove the merge tag, but I'm going to tag it for deletion instead. I'll wait a few days to do that, to give you time to respond. Some of the older lists are not all that well-sourced (one is from a fangirl site with no references, another is from a blog, albeit a large and generally well-regarded one), and the information is not particularly relevant. As for you statement that "the data is not recorded elsewhere on the net", it certainly is, as you have links to each list. Do as you please. You are already in the mindset to progress with this regardless of what I would say. This information was the result of going through over 2,500 websites and determining which data is the most likey to be correct. Better sources did not mean better data (unless some albums can sell negative copies in a year). It also proved the original data that existed before the research was incorrect on this page as well as the page you consider the prime reference page. This would not have been achieveable without matching previous data. It has also proved invalueable at correcting multiple other articles on sales figures, as they can see from one reference point that sales for albums over a period were not as high as they believed. If you delete this page, I will simply store it in my own records - but that defeats the purpose of Wikipedia as aiming to be the one source of verifiable references. I will also clarify my statement that this does not exist on the web, as there is no site that has the year by year breakdown which shows the progression of sales data per annum. Lists for 1991-1999 and 1991-2000 have the same numbers. Considering the source of this data is a 9-year old Backstreet Boys fan page, I wouldn't have any faith in the accuracy of the numbers anyway! Miken32 (talk) 04:02, 5 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

BAD DATA is SOOOO correct. The Bodyguard has sold waaaaay more than 11 million copies in the US. It is about at 18 million, in a few years perhaps approaching double diamond certification at 20 million.

everyone seems to be forgetting about hootie and the blowfishes fist album it has sold 16 million copy's by 1999 and was released in 1994.
