Military vs. armed forces

edit

I prefer "armed forces", as "military" primarily implies armies/soldiery (see, for example, the entry on page 797 of Chambers 20th Century Dictionary, 1987 edition). DuncanHill (talk) 11:08, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

fair point. No problem with that!—User:MDCollins (talk) 11:31, 15 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

OT

edit

I've got all the list referenced (a lot with the webalumnus TSFPA site - which is great for years at school but a proverbial pain to reference from) except two: Hugh Walpole and Geoffrey Healey (Peter King needs dates at school). The web seems abundant with information gleaned from en.wiki, but can't pin down any others. I'm sure their notable and uncontrovertable to remain, but it would be nice for completeness if there was something reliable to ref to.

Also, are we justified in using the term "Old Truronians" - is there anything we can cite to so it doesn't look like a made-up term?! —User:MDCollins (talk) 00:28, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

The ODNB entry for Walpole says he went to Newham House in Truro - was this the same school? As for Old Truronian - it doesn't look made up to me. Truronian is usual for someone or something from Truro (hence the famous bus company), and Old xxx is normal for former pupils of British schools. DuncanHill (talk) 00:33, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I saw that Newham House reference earlier; Have to look into that. (infamous bus company?!) Can you click through some of those webalumnus links I've added. Some (maybe all) are coming up with errors. Maybe the others work because their in my cache. I can't think of any way round that though. At least they are there and some people can access them if needs be.—User:MDCollins (talk) 00:44, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I get an error message on them - maybe because it's a registration required site? DuncanHill (talk) 00:46, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
I was afraid of that.—User:MDCollins (talk) 00:55, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
It can still be used, but if we can find other more accessible sources as well that would be good. DuncanHill (talk) 01:00, 16 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
One point raised at WT:SCH is that these links probably contravene WP:SOURCEACCESS. That may mean that in practice the refs are worthless. This may mean that the school dates need removing where they can't be found elsewhere - which is most of them! Thoughts?—User:MDCollins (talk) 00:15, 27 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Hi, I've scoured the Truro School archives and there are no references to Hugh Walpole or Peter King attending the school, could they be removed from the OT list please? I have seen Hugh Walpole listed as a pupil in the nursery class of Truro High School, which admitted girls and boys, in its admission register from the late 19th century, hence the Truronian connection but he did not go to Truro School. Also I believe Peter King went to Truro Cathedral School not Truro School. I have done extensive research on former pupils of the school who participated in World War Two, and if such a notable soldier went to the school, I am sure there would have been several references to him in contemporary and later material in the school archive. NB Peter King is cited to have attended "here" - whether this should refer to the Cathedral School is another matter. The same could be said of Walpole here - a very reliable site (not). This says "a boarding school in Truro. Which? This is equally vague.
If you feel strongly enough about it, particularly to argue against the reference already provided for King, feel free to remove the items in the list (and paste them here for reference?). Nobody could really object to moving Walpole as there is no verifiable source to explicitly name "Truro School" rather than a boarding school in Truro. Presumably the school would have a database of all alumni. Is that what you've checked?—User:MDCollins (talk) 23:06, 7 October 2011 (UTC)Reply
Hi, here are the references to Peter King and Hugh Walpole that I have removed.
I have thoroughly checked the school's alumni databases and admissions registers and there are no references to either of these two having ever attending the school. In reference to Peter King, it is possible that the Dictionary of New Zealand Biography picked up on the fact he went to school in Truro, and the Cathedral School, previously the grammar school, was sometimes confusingly also referred to as Truro School. In the 1920s when King was likely to have been in Truro, the school that is now known as Truro School was called Truro College. Thanks. Stp50 (talk) 10:15, 13 Oct 2011 (UTC)

Pagename change

edit

I object to the move from List of Old Truronians - the title was consistent with the category, and is the British English usage. "Truro School alumni" is not British English, and is a needless change. DuncanHill (talk) 23:53, 26 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I'd like to thank Torritorri for his swift and good-mannered self-revert on this. DuncanHill (talk) 00:08, 27 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

List of alumni at Truro School

edit

This article was created in order to split the alumni list from the Truro School parent article. However, User:Corbynz has objected to this and has insisted on plain reverting everything without discussion and re-instating the list of alumni into the parent article. Discussion has taken place at Talk:Truro School and further opinion has been requested from WT:WPSCH#List of Alumni articles (Truro School) which seems to indicate support for the split. If you wish to comment, please do so at either discussion.—User:MDCollins (talk) 00:13, 27 May 2010 (UTC)Reply
