Should Geoffrey Fieger be listed here? His J.D. is from the Detroit College of Law and he earned it nearly 30 years before DCL started it's association with MSU? Nate 20:55, 25 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Humm good question, i am leaning towards no. --Boothy443 | trácht ar 06:46, 26 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
I've removed him. Nate 16:32, 1 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
I disagree and think he should be restored. DCL graduates have the option -- with many exercising it -- of trading their DCL degrees for MSU degrees. And in fact, as an MSU alum myself, these individuals have full rights as MSU alumni. Moreover, Fieger himself has donated $ millions to the law school SINCE ITS MOVE to MSU... So if there's no objection, I would like to restore him as an alum. 151.197.39.235 08:48, 5 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
I put back Fieger, but with a daggered footnote (†) about him being a graduate of pre-merger DCL. Hopefully that's a good compromise. Lovelac7 04:59, 29 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

entries with no articles edit

Does this list require entries have an article, or simply a credible claim to notability? --valereee (talk) 00:28, 7 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

Okay, I'm going to boldy declare it's for entries with articles. --valereee (talk) 13:43, 17 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

  • User:Valereee, could you elaborate on the harm the names you deleted were causing to the list? I don't think this was the best course of action, and I'm inclined to think it does harm the article, and Wikipedia's coverage of the university, to sweepingly delete other editors' contributions of reliable sources of information about notable people, in cases where sources were cited. I think your deletion makes it less likely articles about these people will be created. Was that your intention? --TimK MSI (talk) 19:25, 17 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
TimK MSI, no worries. We don't know really whether any of these people are actually notable. A single mention somewhere doesn't tell us that. If this is a list of notable alums, it should be a list of alums who are notable enough for an article, or else things just get bloated fast. I'm persuadable; I posted the question almost two weeks ago and no one answered, so I went ahead and changed it. I actually think it harms the list to have non-notable people on it. If they were notable, someone will create an article about them. --valereee (talk) 20:18, 17 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
Valereee I agree that if individual names are identified that don't meet the criteria in the "Biographical articles" section at the red link guidelines, it is good to remove them, but they should be evaluated case by case. The same guideline also explains the value contributed to Wikipedia by appropriate red links ("Good red links help Wikipedia—they encourage new contributors in useful directions, and remind us that Wikipedia is far from finished"), and advises: "Do not remove red links unless you are certain that Wikipedia should not have an article on the subject" (emphasis theirs). For this article I think we should just follow the existing Wikipedia guideline. Thanks--TimK MSI (talk) 22:23, 17 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
TimK MSI, and I agree that redlinks are useful, I'm sure I've inserted hundreds into articles, but not removing redlinks applies to those in articles, not in "lists of notable X," really. This list is saying these people ARE notable, not (as when you find one in an article) that they might be and someone should check. This list could literally become more redlinks than not. And I do mean literally; MSU has hundreds of thousands of alums, many of them quite successful in their fields. If these people are notable, there'll be another redlink somewhere else to help nudge editors to write the article. If there's no other redlink on them, maybe they aren't notable. FTR, I don't have a strong opinion here, and I'm glad to be having this convo. --valereee (talk) 11:18, 18 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
Valereee, thanks, and I'm sure many of these should be removed, but people who are obviously notable like Pulitzer and national Emmy award winners needn't be swept up in a mass deletion to achieve that. Inclusion of redlinks in the latter case provides a fuller picture of notable people associated with the university. I don't think there's a need for a blanket ban on redlinks in this article, which, if strictly enforced going forward, has predictable potential for reinforcing unintentional systemic bias on Wikipedia, in terms of which fields of activity are fully represented in association with the university. If somebody adds a redlink for a verifiably notable person with a concise, non-promotional bio and a reliable source, I don't think it should be automatically deleted for being a redlink. Thanks--TimK MSI (talk) 12:36, 18 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
TimK MSI, no worries; so I guess we've decided the threshhold is "credible evidence of notability"? --valereee (talk) 12:40, 18 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
That works for me, thanks! --TimK MSI (talk) 12:53, 18 September 2019 (UTC)Reply
