How edit

How did this Oblast manage to keep up its Communist name, in a country that was trying to rid itself of Communism? Kaiser matias 07:51, 19 February 2006 (UTC)Reply

When Leningrad was being renamed, it was a matter of big controversy. There were quite a few people who did not want the city renamed at all. So, in the end, when Leningrad became St. Petersburg, the oblast retained its old name as a compromise. Same thing happened to Sverdlovsk Oblast (the administrative center of which is Yekaterinburg).—Ëzhiki (ërinacëus amurënsis) 14:57, 20 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
You see, Kaiser matias, the name of Leningrad isn't only associated with Communism but also with some tragic events of the World War II, I mean the Siege of Leningrad. So that's why it is still popular. And may be it's off-topic but I'd like to say that it is doubtful if our life has become much more better since we "rid ourselves of Communism". Очень интересно (very interesting). It would be good if more of this history were included in the article — I followed a link here from Federal subjects of Russia because I was surprised that the oblast was still named Leningrad, although the city had become St. Petersburg. I see that there's a footnote referring to a referendum about changing the name of the oblast; I'd like to see some more details about this in the article proper. —Josiah Rowe (talkcontribs) 19:06, 9 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
