Article title

@Primefac:@Onel5969: - I moved Lee White (actor) to Lee "Lasses" White earlier, but this has now been reverted apparently on the basis that nicknames should not be used in article titles per WP:NICKNAME. However, see Nat King Cole, and, perhaps more pertinently, "Weird Al" Yankovic. So whatever the policy or guidance is, it's not applied consistently. As an actor, White is universally known as Lee "Lasses" White - for examples see here and here. As a vaudeville star and songwriter, he was known as Le Roy Lasses White (or Leroy Lasses White), or Lasses White. So, what is the solution here? He was never known as Lee White - unadorned - and his notability was not only as an actor but also as a songwriter and vaudeville entertainer, so using a name by which he was never known, and a disambiguator which gives only part of his notability, seems inappropriate. Should we use Lee Lasses White (on the Nat King Cole model), Lasses White (which redirects here), or revert to the commonest name, which is Lee "Lasses" White? I was going based on your page mover request comments. WP:NICKNAME combines rather well with WP:COMMONNAME to imply that Lee "Lasses" White is not appropriate; Lasses White or the current title may be appropriate, but I think it will take an WP:RM to decide that. I don't understand your first sentence, but my point remains that this person was never, in any circumstances that I can see, not usually known as Lee White. He was born Leroy White, and used a variety of other names including Leroy "Lasses" White, Lee Roy "Lasses" White, Lasses White, and Lee "Lasses" White. So the existing name is incorrect (and the disambiguating term is, at best, only partially correct) - therefore, it should not be used. The only title that is both correct and avoids the use of parentheses is Lasses White. Ghmyrtle (talk) 10:10, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Hi, and thanks for the ping. I understood Ghmyrtle's action in moving the title of the article (which is why I "thanked" them for it). It is incorrect, however, to say he was never known simply as Lee White, as he was cast under that moniker in several of his films... about the same number as he was cast as simply Lasses White. But the vast majority were as Lee "Lasses" White. When I created the article back in 2015 I was unaware of WP:NICKNAME, else I would probably have used the nickname in the title. But perhaps I am interpreting NICKNAME incorrectly. Onel5969 ^{TT me} 10:57, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

OK, I've partly struck my first point, but Lee White is a difficult name to search for - especially as there is a current actor of the same name - and I was going by search results like this. I still think that Lasses White would be preferable. Ghmyrtle (talk) 11:04, 11 February 2019 (UTC)

Lee White (actor) → ? – As discussed above, the article subject was rarely if ever known as Lee White, and - though notable as an actor - he was at least equally notable for his earlier career in vaudeville and as a songwriter. He used various names. The commonest overall was Lee "Lasses" White, with parentheses around his nickname. Examples here, here, here, and primary sources here, here, here... etc. A move to change the article to that title was reverted in this edit. The article subject was born Leroy White but never used that name - in his early (pre-Hollywood) career he used Le Roy Lasses White (here - and sometimes with parentheses), Leroy "Lasses" White (here), Lee Roy "Lasses" White, "Lasses" White, or Lasses White... etc. Secondary sources again use various names - Leroy Robert (Lee Roy) "Lasses" White, Lee 'Lasses' White, Leroy "Lasses" White, Lee "Lasses" White.... etc. etc. The key points are (1) there is no consistency; (2) the unadorned name Lee White is rarely used; and (3) most sources use the nickname in parentheses as part of his name. Given all the circumstances, and assuming that it is undesirable to use parentheses in the article name, I tend to favour a move to Lasses White - a name used throughout his career and which would require no disambiguation - but welcome comments.
