Name spelling in Bangla edit

I added the bangla spelling for Lalon Fakir (লালন ফকির). Note that this Bangla script may be incorrectly rendered in Firefox/WinXP unless you have enabled support for Eastern languages in the control panel. To see it in Linux, you need Firefox with pango rendering enabled. And of course, you need Bangla fonts, but that should come by default with WinXP. --Ragib 9 July 2005 00:28 (UTC)

>> Lalon never wrote down his songs. He, and Bauls in general, in fact discouraged writing down their songs. It's against their philosophy.
Some of his contemporaries or perhaps disciples, probably wrote down some of his songs, most probably without his knowledge or permission. That's how tagore got hold of the Lalon manuscript.:--Monmajhi 10:32, 20 April 2006 (UTC)Reply

Lyrics edit

I am not sure that large chunks of quoted text should appear inthe article (shouldn't it go to Wikitexts?), but there must surely be some evidence given that the work is in the public domain, not just a bald claim in the edit summary. --Phronima 11:47, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand what you mean by "evidence". Lalon died more than 117 years ago. By the copyright laws of ANY country, his works are in public domain. Since you ask, by Indian and Bangladeshi copyright laws, the time is author's life+60 years. It is customary in biographies of poets/writers to have some example work (see Rabindranath Tagore). Unless you are coming up with some amazing proof that would put Lalon's work away from public domain, I intend to restore the example work. Thanks. --Ragib 18:02, 17 May 2006 (UTC)Reply
Are you claiming that Lalon composed his lyrics in English? Copyright attaches both to the original and to the translation; the translator isn't even acknowledged here, and it's impossible to tell whether the English text is out of copyright.
Theimage also lacks a source, I'm afraid. --Phronima 10:41, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

It took me at most 10 seconds to find the image in the site mentioned in the image description. Check out http://www.kushtia.com/images/lalon_big.jpg . I also added a "Fair use in" tag because low resolution reproduction of paintings can be used as "Fair use" as per US copyright laws to illustrate the subject. Thanks. --Ragib 14:20, 18 May 2006 (UTC)Reply

Clean-up edit

A lot of material has been added that's inadequately merged into the article, and there's a lot of work needed to bring the article into line with the Manual of Style, as well as making it NPoV. --Phronima 15:37, 15 June 2006 (UTC)Reply

The materials has been broughht under appropriate sections. So it should not remain in clean-up category anymore. However, the infobox biography is required. --Josephite esraj 19:01, 30 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Too much praise edit

"Lalon is one of the most brilliant and philosophically insightful minds born in oral and textual traditions who expressed his ideas in beautiful songs and wonderful musical compositions using instruments ...". Too much praise in this article. Maybe someone who knows something about Laon could make the article more balanced. Alpheus 21:21, 12 November 2007 (UTC. Please, keep enough information about Bengali and Hindi Literature and then comment on Lalon. He is indeed one of the best. Critiques acclaimed his writings to be more significant than of Nobel Laureate, Rabindranath Tagore.

There's a difference between "he's the best" and "he is highly regarded, having won XYZ award, as well as designated a 'national hero' by President So-and-So." The first is subjective opinion, the second objective fact. The former is not Wiki-appropriate, the latter is. MatthewVanitas (talk) 16:26, 5 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Had Lalon ever said that he was a Muslim or a Hindu? edit

I do not know why people speculate about Lalon's religion when Lalon himself tried to hide his past and was reluctant to reveal his religion if there was any at all. Through his songs, Lalon said that ”সব লোকে কয় লালন ফকির হিন্দু কি যবন ।
লালন বলে আমার আমি না জানি সন্ধান ।।”
”Everybody inquires whether Lalon Fakir Hindu or Muslim
Lalon says I do not know where I belong."
In that case, I am asking to the people who want to prove Lalon as Hindu or Muslim, please, do not insert your definite decision about Lalon's religion without any reliable source. Nevertheless if you believe that Lalon belongs to your caste or religion, please do not forget to mention that others who do not belong to your religion also claim that Lalon belongs to them too. And please try to follow the Manual of Style and do not forget that wikipedia is an encyclopedia, it is a place for no original research. -- Smmmaniruzzaman 17:37, 4 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

I might be 11 years too late but who the hell cares eh?
Lalon in general did not care for your Hindu-Musolman labellings, and I don't think anyone should necessarily claim Lalon for their own group or caste. Lalon is an integral part of Bengali culture in general. However it should be discussed as to which group he was born into irregardless of his religion.
I generally lean more to the Muslim theory because he is buried in a mausoleum. Al Gofran Orin (talk) 12:12, 5 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Birthplace location edit

Can we actually use 'Bangladesh' as the only term when this person existed long before its formation? Yes, we can write British India, Bengal Province, currently Bangladesh, but not only 'Bangladesh' as it doesn't give the complete information. SReader2101 (talk) 21:18, 7 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
