disambiguation template edit

I am confused about the point of the present disambiguation template: there is only one Lajos J... hardly anyone calls him Louis ... Unlike more people calling Wigner Eugene insead of Jeno". Is it useful? Cuzkatzimhut (talk) 21:33, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

That was there from the Hungarian wiki. I would say yes given there are other people called Jánossy Lajos. I'll quickly create an English DAB for Jánossy Lajos (disambiguation). M∧Ŝc2ħεИτlk 21:39, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Cool: I had no idea.... But I doubt the other ones would make it to the english wikipedia... Cuzkatzimhut (talk) 21:47, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
Possibly not, but who knows.
We will have to move the page again, to something like "Lajos Jánossy (physicist)". Also, should we change Lajos Jánossy -> Jánossy Lajos for this page and the DAB page? M∧Ŝc2ħεИτlk 21:51, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
My sense is to never use the Hungarian (or Chinese!) convention of Lastname, Firstname, and instead stick to Firstname, Lastname, so then, Lajos Janossy, Eugene Wigner, John von Neumann, Leo Szilard, etc.... I would also never, ever translate his first name to Louis..... Admittedly, we know Wigner as Eugene and Liszt as Franz, but I believe Janossy always published as Lajos or L. OK, fair enough. But we should move Lajos Jánossy -> Lajos Jánossy (physicist), surely? M∧Ŝc2ħεИτlk 22:05, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hmmm... I have no opinion. Since I doubt other Lajos Janossys will appear in the en:wikipedia,

his name without his profession might well be good enough for now. Your contemplated move would only be needed if and when the second Lajos Janossy emerges on the scene, but I cannot have strong feelings either way, somehow. Perhaps we should let other contributors burnish the article and wait for their input a while? Cuzkatzimhut (talk) 23:29, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yikes: List of Hungarian astronomers had him in the LastnameFirstame convention, like everybody else, as the list must be a direct translation from its Hungarian cousin. As a result, it's a bevy of redlinks, with a few exceptions which only serve to prove the rule. I now fixed him, but even with a heavy heart, as he really has little to do with astronomy. He is a cosmic ray experimentalist, and one is hard put to pigeonhole him as an astrophysicist, just because cosmic rays come from out there. In any case, a redirect for his unaccented name, used in the west, e.g. in his classic Oxford Clarendon Press book, might be in order. Cuzkatzimhut (talk) 23:42, 18 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Agreed, for now let's ask the physics and biography wikiprojects, if they agree to move to Jánossy Lajos then we'll do that (and not Jánossy Lajos (physicist)). M∧Ŝc2ħεИτlk 06:14, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
WikiProject Hungary, WikiProject Physics, WikiProject Biography have been pointed to here. M∧Ŝc2ħεИτlk 06:23, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
We should use Western Name Order on English Wikipedia. (Lajos Jánossy) Fakirbakir (talk) 09:27, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply

Makes sense. I now moved Jánossy Lajos (disambiguation) to Lajos Jánossy (disambiguation) so it is not redlinked in the article page. One might finesse the name orders in that one, in good time. Cuzkatzimhut (talk) 17:14, 19 November 2013 (UTC)Reply
