Rewrite/rework opening Paragraph edit

The first paragraph needs rewriting. Reason: it is self-contradictory. If he were openly gay, how could that not be proved? Obviously when you continue reading the article it is clear that he was not openly gay, but the opener is still confusing/misleading.
