I'm tempted to delete the phrase "was once compared to Salman Rushdie" but I don't want to be too hit-and-run ... but what what the heck is it supposed to mean? I mean like Elvis has been compared to Jesus, etc. etc. but so what? ;Bear 02:42, 2004 Nov 22 (UTC)

The IMBD page says that he's doing a voice for a movie to be released in 2005... What's going on? He IS dead, so... What?

He already did the voice acting for it before he passed away. The movie has just been in production and shelved for years. It's only just been released, if I recall correctly.

WTF?

I can't make heads or tails of the mechanism for reporting vandalism, so hopefully someone will read this comment or NOTICE THAT SOMEONE INSERTED A REFERENCE IN CANDY'S BIO TO HIM PARTICIPATING IN GAY ORGIES. Well, I hope someone does something about it.

Seems to be fixed now.

Mexican flag?

Is it appropriate that we show a Mexican flag beside the name of the state where John Candy died? His link to Mexico was pretty tenuous ... not even a permanent resident. To me, the flag would only be fitting if he'd moved to Mexico or had become a citizen. In January, I deleted the Mexican flag from the article, but it has reappeared. I like flags! I think Candy owned a home in Queensville at some point, but by all accounts he grew up in Toronto (Scarborough, actually), went to high school there, etc.--Vbd (talk) 05:37, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

John Candy's small appearance in Hercules in New York

According to IMDB John Candy had a small cameo in the 1970 film Hercules in New York. This seems very unlikely although the man who appears in the film does have a striking resemblance to Candy. But he looks a lot older than Candy was in 1970. Should this film be included in his filmography. Shakirfan 18:10, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

IMDB lists this credit as "unconfirmed." There is a whole discussion thread[1] on IMDB about whether or not it is him. Northstars.ca[2] says he did have a bit part in the film; I actually trust that site more than IMDB sometimes. But whether it's true or not, I'm not sure that it matters for the purposes of a filmography list. Then again, I am of the opinion that partial filmography lists are more appropriate in WP articles and that IMDB is a better place for complete filmographies. It might matter more in the text of the article, where an assertion is made that his first movie role was three years later, in Class of '44. From what I gather the discussion--staring with a joke posting--at IMDb came before & probably gave birth to the listing, not the other way round. Some time after the discussion had begun somebody added the listing, calling it 'unconfirmed'. Later, somebody changed that to 'uncredited'. For what it's worth, the resemblance between the man in the movie & John Candy is extemely faint. The accent is also American & of an older generation. By the way, nobody seems to have noticed that this little bit of misinformation, now canonized in the IMDb, is inaccurate even on its own terms. Non-Candy appears shipboard, not in the later harbour fight scene. Because he has a beard and sunglasses? That's what Candy looked like in the months leading up to his death. Until we get someone to post a public domain or fair use image that's better, this one is the best we have. --Quartet 15:23, 26 May 2009 (UTC)

I have to agree. The image is terrible. For his whole career he was clean shaven and using any picture of someone wearing sunglasses shouldn't be acceptable on Wikipedia - you must be able to see what the person looked like. Autopsy?

This wiki refers to an autopsy having been performed. Sources I've encountered, including the Candy page at Find a Death, as well as an at Franks Reel Reviews, explicitly state that no autopsy was performed, per the request of Candy's wife.

Not American

The article said he was Canadian-American, but there's nothing in the article that says he became an American citizen. I've also spent the last 10 minutes Googling this, with no success. Place of birth

The article currently says John was born in Newmarket, Ontario, but this is not supported by the cited reference, which says he was born in Toronto. Can somebody please nail this down - because of this, he keeps getting added/deleted/added/deleted from the Newmarket article.

Last Meal

According to the article, his last meal was a Lasange. However, other sources including an article in People Magazine here suggest it was spaghetti. The article also suggests he died in his sleep, but the People article suggests that he didn't pass in his sleep - he had woken and tried to get up. The photo looks good and appropriate- I suppose the problem mentioned has been rectified. It is recognisably John Candy, and it reminds me that the man is not an object of derision, unlike most of the multifaceted characters he portrayed. Looking good, Mr Candy. It's actually a poor photo to use for the infobox, because it is not recognizable as him. The sunglasses and the beard – which he usually did not wear – make it look like someone trying not to be recognized. A cropped version of this photo [3] would be better... it's not a technically great image, but at least it meets the basic criteria for an infobox photo. Jason A.
