Unverified biographical detail

edit

Various family trees on ancestry.com have the following information for Houghton, which I have been unable to verify in any reliable sources I can find:

  • Born February 25, 1810 in Leesburg, Virginia.
  • Parents - William Houghton (1757 – 1835) and Margaret Sexton (1775 – 1864)
  • Married to Ann Caroline Shoemaker (March 21, 1831, Muncy, PA - April 12, 1914, Roswell NM), on Sept 18, 1856 in Fort Union Ranch, Mora Cty, NM
  • Children: William R Houghton 1859 – Edward Houghton (1862 – 1928) or Edward Houghton 1864 - Ellen Lea Nell Houghton (1865 – 1896) - Elizabeth Gertrude Bess Houghton (1867 – 1953) - David Houghton (1870 – ?)

The published sources I have found all say he was born in 1811 in New York. However, consistent with the family trees, I'm rather confident I've located his entry in the 1870 census, which identifies his occupation as "ex associate justice sup. court", and gives his place of birth as Virginia. His father, acc. to the ancestry family trees, was born in NJ and died in NY, so it leaves it unexplained why Joab would be born in VA. Anyway, for now I'm sticking to the "official" version found in the reliable sources cited in the article. Hopefully more research can fill in these details. postdlf (talk) 21:19, 8 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Other Supreme Court cases

edit

Houghton wasn't a party, but testimony he gave in earlier proceedings is quoted in the Court's opinion. Don't know yet whether his involvement was significant enough to merit mention in the article:

Tameling v. United States Freehold and Emigration Co., 93 U.S. 644 (1876)
United States v. Ortiz, 176 U.S. 422 (1900)
