Thanks for uploading File:The Spirit 10.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. Endemic edit

Hi there Postdlf, let me thank you for your interest in anoles and especially the great pictures you have uploaded. But no, that is not how "endemic" should be used. Generally the natural distribution is considered when considering endemism, not the modern extant distribution. It works the other way too, a plant or animal remains endemic to particular place irrespective of where humans have spread it recently. I should really rewrite the article on endemism one day -the concept is constantly used in the wrong way here on Wikipedia -it's a bit of a pet peeve, but "endemism" has a specific meaning, by confusing that one deprecates the word. Note the word has a different meanings in medicine as opposed to biology. In this specific case the text states it is native to Saint Martin and Anguilla, therefore it is by definition not an endemic of either island. Also, you'll note none of the sources use that terminology either for this species. So I will revert you. Cheers, Leo Breman (talk) 20:10, 6 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi Leo, was there a project talk page discussion on that somewhere? Because the way you are interpreting that word is not what I am seeing in dictionary definitions, as well as how it has been used throughout Wikipedia (not just the article endemism, but also the category structure, Category:Endemic fauna). So if everyone is using it differently than you think it should be used, there should be a discussion to determine consensus before you start editing against that usage. Where do you think might be the best place for that discussion? postdlf (talk) 21:21, 6 February 2020 (UTC)Reply
Hmmm, I'm not sure what dictionaries you are using. I will look up some definitions for you if you like. Or we can have the discussion, maybe at tree of life? -that's broad. Distributions and taxonomy are the two things which are sort of my speciality, although anyone can say that, of course. Wikipedia is, of course, a bad source, how people use a word here doesn't denote validity. The use of the word in articles about cats was especially excruciating to me -I couldn't be bothered to correct that. I have a theory on why Wikipedia editors have often used the word incorrectly (Polbot!), but let's not go into that. At a glance Category:Endemic fauna appears correct. When we say "Turkey has a 40% rate of endemism in plants", that means that 40% of the plants (natively) only occur there. If a plant were to occur in both Turkey and Syria, say, then the sentence "fooplant is endemic to Turkey and Syria" is an oxymoron, because the plant is then endemic to neither Turkey nor Syria.
Also, logically, if I am right about the usage of the terminology then I have corrected incorrect text; if I am wrong, then my version of the text is correct either way -so the edit is good in both cases.
I am happy to discuss this more broadly! Say the word and I will start a discussion. Cheers, Leo Breman (talk) 21:45, 6 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

SCOTUS infobox with "Statement" in the opinion author section edit

Could you please add "Statement" in the opinion author section of the infobox, since such a bench opinion has been issued? Kart2401real (talk) 17:04, 4 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

You've already made that request on the template's talk page. Given that the case in question with a one-in-twenty-years kind of opinion is in the per curiam term list and does not have a standalone article, this infobox won't even be used to cover it. postdlf (talk) 19:25, 4 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
I just created a standalone article for this case. Thompson v. Hebdon was the first major campaign finance case to make it to SCOTUS since Citizens United v. FEC. Kart2401real (talk) 15:42, 5 May 2020 (UTC)Reply
The content certainly doesn't justify a split from the term list right now (nor do see it demonstrated that this was a "major" case), and I don't know that it ever will given the brevity of the opinion. But you do you. postdlf (talk) 17:39, 5 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Unless you have specific information to the contrary, it certainly looks like a currently recognized species: CoL, Reptile Database, IUCN. That's not to say that blanking the redirect was in any way a reasonable thing to do (was there some kind of magical thinking that that just makes it disappear from mainspace or something?). Nathan Edmondson edit

Hi. I know you haven't been active for the past couple of months, but my attempts to get others to help regarding an editor blanking content from the Nathan Edmondson article, and refusing to discuss the matter, have only been slightly successful. I've contacted three other admins, and put messages on the WikiComics Project talk page, and only two other editors have so far responded. Since you've participated in disputes regarding comics articles before, can you offer your views in the discussions? How we will see unregistered users edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Koh Masaki edit

This article was deleted because there was a consensus that it failed the WP:PORNBIO criteria, partly because the criteria were written with a degree of US-bias. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Koh_Masaki I noticed today the WP:PORNBIO criteria have been removed.

Also there is substantial new material in addition to the ones listed before, including a book published by the University of Michigan Press in 2021 which refers to him on 20 pages, eight additional gay magazines where the magazines have an entry in Wikipedia, and the Taiwanese Government who use him to promote a safer sex message.

I think at a minimum we need to reconsider whether we should have an article.

I am told the first step in reinstating an article is to contact the administrator, who I believe is you. Dan88888 (talk) 18:37, 13 March 2022 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of The Higgins Boys and Gruber edit

The article The Higgins Boys and Gruber has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable sketch show, zero sourcing found

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Beginning January 1, 2023, administrators who meet one or both of the following criteria may be desysopped for inactivity if they have:

  2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Administrators at risk for being desysopped under these criteria will continue to be notified ahead of time. Thank you for your continued work.

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity edit

Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.

Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.
