Contested deletion edit

This article should not be speedily deleted for lack of asserted importance because I think Jila Ghomeshi satisfies the criteria for notability as an academic based on her receipt of the National Achievement Award by the CLA. This is a national-level award, and the only one of its kind in Canada. It is not a student award or an award associated with a vanity publishing house. Although the National Achievement Award has only existed for 5 years, its pedigree is already clear from looking at the other people who have received it (including Jack Chambers, who probably wrote the foreword to your copy of the Canadian English dictionary, if you have one, and two members of the order of Canada). Jila Ghomeshi's receipt of the award is all the more astounding because she is by far the youngest person to have been awarded it; in fact, 2 of the 6 recipients are already retired. It was on the basis of receiving this award that I wrote the article.

Linguistics is a small field, especially in Canada, and we don't often make waves outside of our field, but, within the field, Jila Ghomeshi's name is one of the big names I learned long before I met her. And I don't have any personal knowledge of her media appearances, but that's one of the reasons she won the award in the first place, so she might qualify under criteria #7, as well (how much is significant? is it relative to the field? because let me tell, journalists aren't exactly lining up to speak to linguists, usually... so twice is a lot. And she's got 4 in the first page of google search results.)

Writing about women edit

Jian Ghomeshi's trial is not the only time that Jila Ghomeshi has defended her brother against one of his victims. Please read jpst.it/HVdZ . — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.13.26.227 (talk) 01:25, 2 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello User:Tchaliburton. For a moment I wish to defer discussion about the WP:UNDUE concerns about saying two things about Jian Ghomeshi in this article, one being that he is a broadcaster, and the second being the allegations. I just want to discuss the idea of moving Jian Ghomeshi out of the first paragraph. One of the reasons I believe we should relocate information about Jian Ghomeshi is that I think that our colleagues who penned the WP:Writing about women an essay have a good point. Their essay encourages Wikipedians to not define women in terms of their relationships to notable men. In some articles, we see leads like: "Susan Smith is a Canadian journalist. She is the daughter of former Governor General Frank Smith and the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Marek Smith. Her son, Timothy Smith is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author." In this made-up example, Susan Smith is defined in terms of her connections to notable men, by blood or marriage, rather than by indicating the notable accomplishments that have earned her a WP article. Writing about Women encourages Wikipedians to move information about notable women's family members out of the lead, and have the lead focus on the woman and her accomplishments. The family members can be described, but later in the article. OnBeyondZebraxTALK 03:26, 24 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

I agree that the information about Jian Ghomeshi should be moved as was mentioned above in WP:Writing about women Her accomplishments have nothing to do with her brother and he should not be mentioned so prominently. I am removing this sentence "She is the sister of Jian Ghomeshi, former CBC broadcaster." for now and will try to work it into another section if it seems important to her accomplishments as a linguist.Science2019 (talk) 21:51, 27 March 2019 (UTC)Reply
