WP:MILHIST Assessment

edit

A nice start, though the introduction could use some work; the rest of the article perhaps as well. The sentence explaining the meaning of Eismeer simply needs to be reworded; as it stands it's quite awkward. LordAmeth 18:47, 6 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Rewrote parts of the article and attempted to reword the Eismeer line, not sure if it got any better tough :) Abel29a 01:15, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Removed some excessive info

edit

In April 1942 he was sent to 7./JG 5 at Petsamo. In March 1944 he shot down seven Douglas Boston bombers in one day. On 1 August he was promoted to Staffelkapitän of 10./JG 5. He was transferred to the West to fly the Me 262 and was appointed Staffelkapitän 3./JG 7 on 24 March 1945. He shot down eight aircraft while flying the Me 262.

Removed this as the article is about JG 5, not Walter Schuck - will add it to an article about him later Abel29a 08:01, 22 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:JG5 emblem.jpg

edit

Image:JG5 emblem.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Achievement

edit

I've labelled this section for puffery;
"Throughout its operational history JG 5 found itself faced with overwhelming numbers of Soviet aircraft" is clearly untrue; the 1942 section says they established a numerical and qualitative superiority, and were faced with just 170 Soviet aircraft. It is true that Soviet air power improved in numbers and quality over time (with the German experts soldiering on while replacement pilots "came and went like ghosts" as Spick puts it) but it certainly wasn't "throughout".
Also the casualties given don't compare like with like. Comparing pilots lost with aircraft claimed is misleading; many pilots were shot down but survived to fight again (Galland was shot down 16 times,(I think) and on one occasion twice in the same day). And as all pilots overclaimed (again the 1942 section refers to 72 claims compared to 37 actual losses, pretty much double) total claime is not even the same as total aircraft destroyed.
This needs better wording and a more accurate comparison. Xyl 54 (talk) 12:19, 16 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
