Ismail

edit

The Literal translation of the word Ismail is like "Heard by Allah or God has heard", referring to the fact that he was a child very-sought-after by Ibrahim and his wife princess Sa'ra (Her mother Hadjera/Hagar was the handmaid of the princess) and through Ismai'l the fountain Zamzam(? check spelling)gave birth to the city of Mecca, Al-baladil Ameen(?). Moreover, Muhammad(Sallu wa Taslim) is a descendant of Ismai'l(Alaihissalam), which fuliflled the divine promise by Allah to himself to send Muhammad as the final and global messenger with Q'urAn.

So, the word refers to fulfillment of divine promises as a token of the prayer being heard(?Learned men! please check).

Ismail (name)Ismail — Requesting with "Ismail" be moved to "Ismail (disambiguation)". The main topic is the name "Ismail", the "Ismail" page shouldn't just be a link to the similar "Izmail" and the name page. Once moved, a hatnote on the main "Ismail" page with a link to the "Ismail (disambiguation)" page will be better.--John Cengiz talk 00:06, 8 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Per primary topic, Ismail is a hugely common Arabic name, should not be piped to get to the name page. The other uses (only 2) can be listed at "Ismail (disambiguation)" with a hatnote on "Ismail" linking there. John Cengiz talk 13:51, 28 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

  • Comment. I forgot to mention the large difference in the pronunciation between "Ismail" [ˈiːsmɑːˈiːl] and "Ishmael" /ɪʃˈmeɪl/ - they look similar but are quite different names. There are many, many, more people with the name "Ismail" on Wikipedia than "Ishmael", try searching "site:en.wikipedia.org ismail". "Ishmael" is a rarely used old English name, whereas "Ismail" is a very common Arabic, Turkish, Persian, etc name of all ages, people going to the "Ismail" page are more likely looking for people with the name. • If you look at what links here for Ismail, nearly all of the links appear to be for a) for geographic features that do not have articles yet; b) a Russian ship that likewise has no article yet; or c) the mythic Ishmael. I haven't come across any referring to a person by only the first name. You're making an assumption about that people searching for "Ismail" are looking for people with that name, but offer no evidence other than saying it is a common name. John is a common name in English, but is nonetheless a disambiguation page. While there are some name pages that are the primary topic, that is most typical when there are very few or no other uses of the term. As the what links here indicates, there is considerably ambiguity as to what the term refers to. Without any other actual evidence of a primary topic, I think it should either remain a disambiguation page or redirect to Ishmael and merge the disambiguation content. olderwiser 16:29, 28 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
