"It is not necessary to go through customs to access the park;"

Presumably this applies only to visitors coming from the south? Morwen - Talk 13:13, 27 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nope. I obviously come from the north and there is a road to turn off before you reach the customs and then the US for Canadians to access the park. In fact, this is the only entrance that I know of, which is on the Canadian side (see map from the Peace Garden's website). I've never accessed from the American side, so this probably means that Americans can bypass customs to access the entrance on Canadian soil. Since Canadians enter before US customs is reached, that sentence applies to us as well, but in a different sense. --Canuckguy 01:14, 17 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

I was wondering about this too, so I did some searching. There is only one entrance and exit to the park, and it lies between the two customs stations. The customs stations are not located on the border, but about 100 m inland from the border. The turnoff for anyone entering the park lies on the exact border between the two countries. This way, it is not necessary to go through customs for anyone entering the park, but you must go through one of the two customs to exit the park. From the official website:

It is not necessary to go through customs to access the park; however, the port is open 24 hours a day for through traffic. You will need to report back to your country's customs upon exiting the park.

Google Earth provides the best way to see how this works:

See the Google Maps View. The border crossing is on the right, connecting highway 10 in Manitoba to highway 281 in North Dakota. The border runs horizontally across the middle of the screen. The entrance can be seen between the two border stations on the exact border. If you zoom in you can see it more clearly. --70.81.251.32 15:31, 3 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

I today at least clarified it to
Visitors must pass through one of these customs stations after exiting the park.

Latitude: 48° 59' 57" North

The park website has their coordinates a little off from 49.000000: "Latitude: 48° 59' 57" North" as do some of the on line map sites, which makes sense as those old surveys were not too exact. Therefore reconsider your use of 49.00000 please. Jidanni 02:14, 13 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

I think 19th-century measurement errors were ratified by later treaties, so that the official boundary is not where it was first intended to be, at exactly 49 degrees north latitude, but is rather where the 19th-century surveyors put survey markers.
