Why Sir Ian?

How much does it really takes to be knighted? He is not very famous or even conspicuous. In fact I would not have noticed him if he had not been the living person bearing the closest resemblance to Napoléon I. No, he played no part in creating my mental image of how Napoleón looked! Most of it was already in place in 2001 when I browsed through a Lord of the Rings merchandise book. When I saw a photo of Ian disguised as Bilbo he seemed familiar in some way. After a moment the thought hit me that I had never seen a living human more closely resembling Napoleón. But they are no look-alikes: it is easy to tell them apart if you only have a clear mental image of one of them.

Or for your achievements in the world of art and theatre. Sir Ian is in Britain a very famous theatre actor and he was knighted after his great performance in 'King Lear', heralded in the newspapers as 'the Lear of the century'. I had the great pleasure to see this performance and it was for me the best and most overwhelming portray of Lear, that I have ever seen. So there is much more than just Bilbo and Napoleon! Ian is not very famous in Sweden where I live. Apparently, he is in Britain and that is what really counts.

Minor role ?!

Holm's role in Nicholas and Alexandra was hardly minor seeing as he portrayed one of the titular characters (Tsar Nicholas himself). I'll alter the sentence accordingly if no-one objects. Plutonium27 (talk) 09:52, 21 January 2008 (UTC)

I am afraid that you need to watch the film again. Tsar Nicholas was played by Michael Jayston. Holm Portrayed a Russian named Yakoflev. Now it has been a couple of years since I last watched it but I think that this character was a Russion soldier who was either in charge of guarding, or was one of the guards of, the royal family after the abdication but before their final execution. the link to the Sir Ian Holm page is indeed a fanpage, but it is at least as much referenced as the movie data page (on which I could not find any reference). You may notice, that there are a lot of pictures of old productions of the Royal Shakespeare Company on the page, which were put there with the consent of the RSC and the Shakespeare Birthplace trust, after they have proved the page. Also, on the 2 other listed pages (imdb and movie) there are no references at all to Sir Ian's theatre and radio/audio work. Except on the RSC homepage, you will find nowhere more information about his pre-movie work, than on the Sir Ian Holm page. I therefore do not think, that it is of no relevance about Sir Ian's work and I think, that it should stay listed, as it has now been for several years Anne-theater (talk) 23:36, 17 March 2008 (UTC)

It was for a long time the only page about Sir Ian written mostly in German, before imdb starting the German translations. And as I am more interested in Sir Ian's theatrical work, than in his movies, this was important information for me. Neither imdb nor movie data listen his work in the theatre and the RSC's homepage was difficult to search and did not cover his work outside the RSC. Therefore I thought and still think, the page an interesting source. But if you think, that readers of the English wiki are not interested in it, so... (What references do you mean? Name change?

The article says he was born Ian Holm Cuthbert. He at some point dropped his last name in favor of his middle (and mother's maiden) name, but the article makes no mention of when or why. I couldnt find anything in a quick scan of google results but any information would be a good addition. --Jieagles (talk) 23:43, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Stage Fright

His IMDB page mentions a crippling bout of stage fright that struck in 1976, during a production of The Iceman Cometh - apparently in the middle of a performance - that seems to have remained with him for several years afterwards and curtailed his theatrical career. He talks about it in this interview at PBS.com, so it's not something he has personally tried to cover up. Why is it that the Wikipedia article makes no mention of it? It would be a trivial matter to add a sentence on this topic using the source I have just provided, but the total absence of this information sets my spider sense tingling. -Ashley Pomeroy (talk) 22:09, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

That is what the Wikipedia article says. Looks like Google search hasn't updated their Knowledge box though- this is something we have no control over, you would have to contact Google. Joseph2302 (talk) 12:59, 19 June 2020 (UTC)
