Enclosures didn't mean the execution wasn't public

edit

It is a stretch to conclude that because the gallows were located within enclosure walls that it wasn't a public hanging. There is no wording in the definition of public hanging that would lead one to believe this, either. Public hanging only differs from private hangings in that the general public could not view them - much like executions of modern times, excluding victim and suspect families. Enclosure walls were not used specifically to prevent unauthorized viewing as the article claims, but were used for order and crowd control, and in some states to charge admission. The two are not mutually exclusive. And the source used does not prove the claim that because the enclosure existed that it was not public.GuyBanks (talk) 19:31, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Not the last public execution

edit

The article makes mention that some refer to Hardy as the last public execution in the United States (and ignoring the article's improper definition of "public") and follows that by mentioning two men who were publicly executed two months after Hardy. GuyBanks (talk) 19:57, 26 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

CSD A7

edit

Hurt Hardy's article fails the criteria of WP:A7. Hurt Hardy's crime was not unusual or noteworthy, he is/was not a renowned national/international figure. Based on WP:CRIME

The article was likely created on the basis that he was the last person to be publicly executed in the United States, but the article is littered with references to Rainey Bethea, who even still is not the last person to be publicly executed in the United States.

Being the 3rd to last person to be publicly executed is not signficant.

WP:CRIME is about notability. A7 is a much lower bar than notability. I've declined the A7. If you feel this doe snot meet notability, then you should nominate this at WP:AFD. -- Whpq (talk) 00:36, 27 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
