Witch trial edit

I heard there was a witch trial on Åland in 1665-68, where six people was killed. It would be interesting to read about! Perhaps it should be mentioned. --85.226.235.208 (talk) 14:46, 13 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

That was one of the most famous witch trials in Finland. There is an article on Swedish wiki: sv:Häxprocessen på Åland. To summarize; an ordinary case of magic against the fortune teller Karin Persdotter in 1665, (normally only punished with fines), were developed in to a witch trial by the governor Nils Psilander, who was a stern witch-believer, after Karin had mentioned the Devil in her confession; he made her admit having been to the witches meeting and made her name the other she had seen there. They were arrested, the Devil's mark were found on their bodies and they were tortured to confession. Six women were executed by 1668 before the higher autorities put an end to Psilander--85.226.235.231 (talk) 14:01, 17 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

WWII edit

Does anyone know whether Nazi and/or Soviet forces occupied Åland during WWII? (I know it was demilitarised, but that doesn't in itself seem a sufficient answer, as neither Germany nor the USSR was known for its respect of such things.) Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.146.228.185 (talk) 17:44, 7 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

No, Åland was not occupied.--130.234.68.223 (talk) 09:49, 24 September 2009 (UTC)Reply

The simple part edit

How many islands are there? Do they have names? Are the islands part of Finland or Sweden, or both? If they are part of either/both, why do they have their own flag? Do they have any big cities in them? Industries? Those are all very simple questions the entry doesn't answer. I'm not Scandinavian and this is the first time I've heard about the islands, so I wanted to know more. - 187.20.81.41 (talk) 03:06, 11 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Åland is part of Finland, the islands have names, and there are more than 6700 islands. They have their own flag, and there is one "city", Mariehamn. Industries: Potato chips. Agriculture: Apples. --Abc10 (talk) 09:55, 24 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
