I made a few edits today to clean up the article and add citations. I found some nice sources online along the way, and I thought I'd share them here. I don't have time now to add new material from these sources, but I might later if no one else does. Sources listed as references:

• Early history of Wash U The intriguing thing about this source is that it was written in 1875. It's an early history of Wash U from the period. Note: If the above link is broken, this might work (click on Washington University, it's near the bottom).
• Founding of Wash U This is really an excerpt of the book Beginning a Great Work: Washington University in St. Louis, 1853-2003 by Candace O'Connor. I'd imagine the rest of the book would also be helpful.
• Wash U chronology This timeline also includes dates on important events with desegregation, and adding women (Wash U was originally all-male). Adding a paragraph on women at Wash U (like what's there with African Americans) would be good.

Sources currently not in the article:

• Interview with an Author This is an interview with Ralph Morrow, who at that time had recently published Washington University in St. Louis: A History. Again, this seems like an interesting book if someone can get a hold of it.
• The Bears mascot
• The expansion of Wash U's campus and the origins of the different departments

Editing notes:

• I can't find evidence that the Board of Trustees wanted the name to be the O'Fallon Institute because they wanted O'Fallon's money. In fact, this site (scroll down to the bottom) seems to directly contradict this. It would be great if someone can find conclusive evidence either way.
• I can't find evidence that Wash U had no financial endowment to begin with. My first and second sources above suggest otherwise. I suppose it's up to interpretation what "begin with" means. By 1871, Wash U had an endowment, because "between $250,000 and $300,000 was furnished for buildings, apparatus, and endowments." (from the first source).
• I didn't have time to make the citations real citations (i.e. MLA, APA, etc.). Please do so if you can.
