Could it be said that another model for Hilda was (despite the difference in gender) Benjamin Britten? Was not her all-female opera Emily Butter a satire of Britten's all-male opera Billy Budd? Certainly some people thought so and accused the BBC of bad taste when in 1976 (as far as I recall) they repeated the plays while Britten was on his death-bed.
