In addition to coaching Appenzeller developed the first undergraduate sport management in the U.S. at Guilford College with the major currently the largest major on campus with a wealth of alumni. Herb wrote 29 books in his career, most in the field of sport Law and risk management of which he is considered the Father of sport Law and risk management. Appenzeller also wrote Pride in the Past A History of Guilford Athletics for the sesquicentennial of Guilford College 1837 to 1987.
