I deleted the following entries;

  • There is no linked article in the entry.
  • There is no reference to a word "hannya" in the linked article.

Serpent

edit

Hannya is not a serpent but a devil/demon/ogre (oni) woman. https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E8%88%AC%E8%8B%A5%E3%81%AE%E9%9D%A2

  • I deleted the section that was just a plot summary of the play Aoi no Ue, which has its own page.
  • The works cited need to be referenced throughout the article via footnote.
  • The etymologies of the name have some inaccuracies and need to be cleaned up.
  • It appears that the picture does NOT depict a Hannya mask; it depicts a miniature (netsuke) of the mask. A useable image of an actual mask should be found.
  • Possible expansion ideas: more on the type of plays this mask is used in, more on the history of the mask.

I've started working on these, trying to find new sources and going through the ones on the bottom of the page for details. I added sections, in the hopes that each will be fleshed out.

Okay, so I went through the references that were linked at the bottom and put them in as footnotes where they were appropriate and deleted the broken links. Some of the things that still have "citation needed" can be verified and should not be removed until an attempt has been made to source them (for example, I know the association between the Hannya Shingyo and the exorcism of demonic women comes from Arthur Waley, just need to find the reference. Probably his translation of Aoi no Ue?) I'm really new at wikipedia so it's been a lot of learning as I go.
