Platform layout

edit

I think that there may be a problem with the platform layout section. From memory, platforms 6 and 7 are on opposite sides of the same single line and train doors will only open on the platform 6 side. Could someone with a more comprehensive knowledge of the station confirm or refute this and make the change on the article page. Thanks Mertbiol (talk) 21:23, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

I think that what you have said is right. I haven't been in there for a while but I have a vague recollection of the doors only opening one side - laughing at people on the wrong platform probably!! It would be great if I knew what side it was though. Arriva436talk 21:55, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've only been there once this year -- and I live in Guildford (such are the train fares...Boo!) However, you are quite right and (all from memory) there is a single line running between Platforms 6 and 7, signalled for bi-directional running. It is normal for the North Downs (Reading-Gatwick, etc) trains to use this line in both directions. The doors will open on the Platform 6 side, although in the days of slam-door stock there was nothing to stop you from getting out the other side (IIRC).
As an aside, this week's Surrey Advertiser (front page) includes a story that Network Rail have announced a new partner for the redevelopment of Guildford station. You'd have to fish out suitable resources, but the plans include the building of new platforms and increasing the train length to 10 or 12 coaches.

Here!
I have had a look at the photo I took from the road bridge by the station. (It's in the infobox). If you zoom in, you can see on the far right platform 2. Platform one if a dead-end a the back so you can't see it. Opposite platform 2 is of course 3. On the island with 3 is 4. The opposite 4 on the next island in the middle of the station is 5, with is with six.
There we have platforms 6 and 7. The freight train is occupying them in the photo, and you can clearly see the arrangement. Finally, on the island with 7 is 8. I hope this clears if up for anyone who doesn't understand!!! Arriva436talk 18:53, 20 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

[unindent] Are we sure about the services using platforms 6 and 8?? The last time I used them, I'm sure that Platform 6 was used for all FGW services (both directions) and 8 for SWT to Aldershot/Ascot. This certainly used to be the case... EdJogg (talk) 13:05, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

The vast majority of Aldershot/Ascot line services use plat 8 and plat 6 is used by most, but not all, FGW services in either direction - it all depends on the time of day. Also, plat 2 is generally used by Waterloo via Cobham stopping services rather than Waterloo via Woking stoppers (of which there are only a handful of services a day) As the timetable currently stands, plat 3 is rarely used outside of the peak.Wagepoach (talk) 18:07, 24 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
