Release date edit

The text-labelled cartridge here:- http://www.atariage.com/software_page.html?SoftwareLabelID=215 was indeed released in 1980 as this article states.

Although, for some years, I've personally owned this other version of cartridge with the graphical label and a 1978 release date:- http://www.gamersace.com/atari-2600-golf-classic-vintage-sports-video-game-p-1139.html (The 1978 date can be seen by clicking on the above cartridge image to see the larger image)

It's also mentioned here:- http://uk.gamespot.com/atari2600/sports/golf/index.html

So I think the eariest version of GOLF was released in 1978. I'm no Atari 2600 expert, but it might be worth updating the article to mention the 1978 release too.

It's a missprint. Picture labels did not exist before 1981. All the Golf picture labels (save for the '86 re-release which states 1986 for the copyright) have the wrong 1978. All the text labels have the correct 1980 date, and the game first appears in Atari's 2600 catalogs in 1980. --Marty Goldberg (talk) 23:16, 22 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
Thanks very much for the quick reply and the info. I'm glad now I mentioned this on the talk page, rather than incorrectly editing the article itself. Best Regards, Green Lane (talk) 08:31, 23 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Requested move 30 October 2022 edit

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: not moved. There is no consensus to move to the (1980 video game) disambiguator. An alternative disambiguator, ([platform] video game) was proposed, however did not have much support in the discussion. Golf (Atari 2600)Golf (1980 video game) – As the game is the only one of that title released in 1980, identifying the platform is unnecessary. • Oppose. Per the naming criteria, much more recognizable (better known) as the Atari golf game (its only golf game) than as the 1980 golf game. WP:NCVG falls apart with examples like this. czar 15:31, 30 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Even if that's the case, the page should be disambiguated by appending "([platform] video game)" to the title rather than just the platform name per WP:NCVGDAB, so some sort of move is in order either way. Cat's Tuxedo (talk) 16:06, 30 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
For what it's worth, I think that's redundant. MOS:VATITLE just puts the artist's name in parentheses as sufficient disambiguation for the naming criteria. czar 00:01, 1 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • There is one other issue, the one external link on the page (Atari Mania) says that the game was released in 1978 not 1980. Is there evidence that the site is wrong and that this actually came out in 1980?--65.92.162.81 (talk) 03:14, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose per Czar. It is far more informative to disambiguate by platform than by release year. Evidently there are 3 other video games simply called "Golf" (Golf (disambiguation)#Games) and readers are more likely to remember the platform than the year to find the one they're looking for. No strong opinion about including (video game) in the parenthetical, but it does seem to be recommended at WP:NCVGDAB. Axem Titanium (talk) 16:43, 31 October 2022 (UTC)Reply
Relisting comment: There is no consensus to move to the (1980 video game) disambiguator. Relisting in consideration for an alternative proposed disambiguator, ([platform] video game), given that the proposed alternative has one oppose and one somewhat neutral. – robertsky (talk) 03:36, 6 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Updated edit

I've updated this article basically giving it a full full re-write. I was going to move it, but then saw the discussion above. I don't feel like anyone other than Wikipedians will care about the disambiguation, so despite my edit comment about moving it, I'll leave it for now. Feel free to ask me or confirm any information regarding the changes. Andrzejbanas (talk) 00:12, 17 February 2024 (UTC)Reply
