Slaughter vs mass killing

edit

I changed "slaughter" to "mass killing" because slaughter is not an appropriate term for human killings—my reasonings:

  1. NPOV
  2. The quote in paragraph two from Primo Levi

I feel strongly that my change is proper; can you defend yours, please? (thank you for your contributions, nonetheless) --Parhamr 04:13, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

User Parhamr twice changed 'slaughter' into 'mass killing'. Three people are not a mass, and slaughter reflects best how it was described in Italy. - Mafia Expert 09:50, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The history shows I only changed it once. --Parhamr 17:46, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

You are right, sorry about that, my fault. - Mafia Expert 18:18, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

Do you have a source that refers to it as a slaughter? Can we add a brief explanation in the article, after the word is used? Can we get other people to weigh in on this? —Parhamr 18:23, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

The issue is the translation of the Italian word "strage". I looked it up, these are the results:

Principal Translations/Traduzioni principali:

  • strage (massacro) nf massacre
  • strage (massacro) nf bloodshed

Additional Translations/Traduzioni aggiuntive:

  • strage (distruzione) nf destruction
  • strage (massacro) nf bloodbath
  • strage (massacro) nf slaughter
  • strage (massacro) nf butchery

Slaughter is one of the translations, but I can live with massacre, bloodshed or bloodbath as well, if you think that is more convenient. Mass killing is definitely to strong. I changed it to bloodshed. Do you agree? - Mafia Expert 18:43, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree. Thank you for discussing this. —Parhamr 21:19, 12 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
