"... rank of captain as a gunner ...." ??

In my experience, this makes no sense. A gunner is someone who crews a gun; a captain in the artillery would probably command a battery of several guns. "He served in the rank of captain in the artillery" is perhaps what is meant, but is redundant given the identification of his unit. Re-phrase??

A "Gunner" is also a colloquial generic for an ex-soldier or officer of the Royal Artillery, in keeping with the Corps' nickname, "the Gunners", similar to the way those of the Royal Engineers are referred to as "Sappers" even despite promotion. The phrase could thus be expressed as "...rank of Captain in the Gunners.."Cloptonson (talk) 22:04, 9 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
