English language variants
editI have removed the British English tagging for this article. As the original author, I can assure all interested editors that the article was NOT written in British English, because all variants of English have unique descriptive advantages. I consider unwarranted tagging for any specific variant an inappropriately disruptive limitation to comprehension of a widely used language, but I am prepared to yield to consensus. - No need to panic. Your prose is not affected. However, I added considerable text which uses BE rather than AE spelling. Apart from correcting some honest mistakes that is. How that constitutes an "unwarranted disruptive limitation", I fail to see. ÄDA - DÄP VA (talk) 05:42, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
- I didn't mean to imply editing in British English (or American English, Canadian English, Australian English, Indian English, etc.) was disruptive. The inappropriate limitation is tagging an article which effectively utilizes various English dialects so all future editors should use the dialect specified by the tagger rather than alternative dialects with which individual editors may present information less ambiguously. - Well, I am trying to follow WP:ART1VAR here. I am not a native speaker of any variety of English. I am dealing with several thousand of articles on German submarines. Many of these have been created ages ago by users no longer with us. I need to make a choice between e.g. "draft" and "draught" . Since the major source (Gröner 1991) is using British spelling - and incidentally I went to university in Britain - BE it is. Unless, there are strong national ties, e.g. U-505. However, WP policy is to avoid dialect in favour of commonality. So it should not be much of a problem. ÄDA - DÄP VA (talk) 19:53, 16 December 2015 (UTC)
