Garrigues (disambiguation)

I propose that when a person types "Garrigues" in the search box, that the link go directly to the Garrigues (disambiguation) page. I made the suggestion in the Wikipedia:Editor assistance/Requests section, and I received this answer from User:Fluri:

The "search box" goes, by default, to the article with the exact name one types. If one types Garrigues, it takes you to the page by that name. The only way to accomplish what you describe would be to rename (move) the pages to the names you want. Firstly, you would move the Garrigues page to something like Garrigues, Spain and then move the Garrigues (disambiguation) page to Garrigues. None of this should be done, however, without posting to the talk page of both articles telling editors what you suggest doing. Only after a full discussion or, at least, providing ample opportunity for discussion, should you attempt such a move. In general, the principle is that the base name should be at the page that is most likely to be searched for. I don't have a problem with Garrigues being the title of a disambiguation page, but in any case the disambiguation page should follow the standards for a disambiguation page, not be a mid-length article on the dictionary meaning of the word followed by disambiguation. The article on the word as such should probably be at something like Garrigues (brushland). And, if someone chooses to do this, then they should also sort out the incoming links. - Jmabel | Talk 20:21, 5 December 2007 (UTC)

I am currently proposing that the Garrigues page should be replaced by the content now found on the Garrigues (disambiguation) page and the the material presently on the Garrigues page should be moved to a new page to be titled Les Garrigues, Catalonia If you have the time I would appreciate your comments on the Discussion page at Garrigues. Hi. It seems like a good idea to me, but I'm concerned someone may object to "Les Garrigues, Catalonia", instead of "Les Garrigues, Spain" or "Les Garrigues, Lleida". I agree with Jmabel: the disambiguation page can not be so long. I do not oppose the change, but the disambiguation page must be broken in one article and one "proper disambiguation" page.

Shift of pages.

Absolutely not, never, no way do this. That is not the advice you were given. When you do that, it divorces the page history from the page to which it belongs and, among other things, it breaks the copyright chain on the submitted text. I suggested that "The only way to accomplish what you describe would be to rename (move) the pages to the names you want" [emphasis added]. Note that the advice was to rename or move the page, not to cut and paste the text... At the bottom of each article page is a "Move" link. That's what you need to use. OK, at this point, it can't be fixed without the intervention of an administrator. What we need is for an admin to move the page currently at Garrigues to Les Garrigues, over top of what's there now. Then we need the admin to move what's now at Garrigues (disambiguation) over top of what's currently at Garrigues. Finally, he will have to delete the page currently at Garrigues (disambiguation). That will accomplish the page moves while keeping the page histories intact. After those moves are complete, GeorgeLouis, I suppose, as the proponent, will have to tweak the text on both pages to make sure the links are correct and to put some disambiguation text in, where appropriate. Finally, the "What links here" will have to be checked for each page and each of those links will have to be checked to make sure that they point to the correct page at its new location. There's way more to moving pages around than just cutting and pasting text. Please make a page move request at [[Wikipedia:Requested moves] that details the sequence I described, here.
