Name change

edit

He recently changed his name to Fuad, see official roster: http://toronto.fc.mlsnet.com/players/roster.jsp?club=t280 and http://www.sportsnet.ca/soccer/blogs/2009/02/02/dobson_new_sense_of_optimism/ Noonehasthisnameithink (talk) 17:38, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Is it actually a name change - as in legally, with documents and everything - or is "Fuad" just a variation for Abdus which he prefers to be called, the way Jack is for John, or the way Bill is for William? --JonBroxton (talk) 17:46, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
I don't know, I don't think the names are related, It'll be better to wait for confirmation of a official name change or a compromise could be met mentioning his name without moving the page. Noonehasthisnameithink (talk) 17:57, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
How about the change I just made? And we can make Fuad Ibrahim a redirect... sort of like Kenny Mansally has. --JonBroxton (talk) 18:05, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Known as...

edit

Should we put 'Commonly known as Fuad' or 'Also known as Fuad'? I personally prefer the latter. GiantSnowman 18:13, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'm happy with either - so long as the article remains at Abdus, and Fuad is noted as his 'preferred common name'. --JonBroxton (talk) 18:20, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
Looks good but I think Abdus is short for Abdusalam, why include Abdus afterwards? Also his nickname is Ibee, so it could be Abdusalam 'Ibee' Ibrahim aka... Noonehasthisnameithink (talk) 18:31, 4 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ethiopian

edit

Dude isn't Ethiopian. I was born in Austria, doesn't make me Austrian. He's Somali. American from Somalia. Hundreds of thousands of Somalis fleed Somalia during the 1990 civil war. Most of us born after 1989 were born overseas. That does not change our nationality nor ethnicity. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.49.220.77 (talk) 06:31, 26 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Take a seat wariyah. I talked to Fuad himself and he told me that he is Oromo, which is an indegeones ethnic group in Ethiopia. Nice try, but not all Muslims in Dire Dawa and Ethiopia are Somali. 99.226.37.176 (talk) 19:52, 25 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Correct references to Fuad by his fathers or grand fathers first name Ibrahim

edit

We need to correct references to Fuad by his father's or grandfather's first name Ibrahim. Due to patronymic. See: WP:SURNAME. Since there has been a contention over his name in the past. I thought I should bring it up before making these changes. But unless someone objects, I will correct article to refer to him by his now legal, I believe, first name. Please read linked pages before commenting. አቤል ዳዊት (Janweh) (talk) 01:24, 8 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

What are you talking about? This person is commonly known as Fuad Ibrahim. See WP:COMMONNAME. – Michael (talk) 08:04, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Yep, the RM above shows consensus per COMMONNAME for 'Fuad Ibrahim'. GiantSnowman 09:18, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
I have no problem with "Fuad Ibrahim" or the article being called "Fuad Ibrahim". That is in perfect agreement with WP:COMMONNAME. My problem is with subsequent mentions of his name as in sentences like, "Ibrahim spent his early career with the IMG Soccer Academy, FC Dallas...." Please read WP:PATRONYMIC, Patronymic, and Habesha names. I would like to apply Template:Habesha name and change these sentences to refer to as Fuad as per WP:SURNAME. — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 09:38, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Again, RS refer to him as 'Ibrahim' rather than 'Fuad'. GiantSnowman 09:45, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
WP:COMMONNAME only applies to the article's title. There is a seperate guideline dictating the name used in subsequent references to the person in the article. That guideline is Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Biographies. If you just read the sections I linked: WP:SURNAME and WP:PATRONYMIC. You will realize that this article incorrectly references to Fuad as Ibrahim. It does not matter whether sources refer to him as Fuad. That does not change the fact that Ibrahim is a patronymic and therefore NOT HIS SURNAME. — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 09:57, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
You are conveniently ignoring the fact that this guy was raised in America, where patronymics do not exist. GiantSnowman 10:01, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
So was I and thousands of other Ethiopians and Eritreans who still use the naming system. I bet you his jersey in 5 hours time will say Fuad on the back.— አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 10:09, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
For the Ethioptian national team, yes - but what does his US team jersey say? GiantSnowman 10:16, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
Listen, I am not denying that in the west, he is referred to as Ibrahim. But that is incorrect. Are you implying that Wikipedia encourage American ignorance. Look at players like Ronaldo. It is not a new thing. You just can't wrap your mind around it. Fuad was born in Ethiopia. His name is a Patronymic. His father has a different last name than him. His mother has a different last name than them. His name is not Ibrahim. These are all facts. — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 10:34, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
If these are facts, then evidence it through reliable sources. Basic stuff. GiantSnowman 11:23, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
You are correct without references, my argument is moot. — አቤል ዳዊት?(Janweh64) (talk) 12:38, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply

If you can find references that refer to him as 'Fuad' as opposed to 'Ibrahim' then you would have a much stronger argument. GiantSnowman 12:40, 21 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
