The title Dame (Dame Commander of the British Empire - DBE) became an established order of chivalry on the 4 June 1917 during the reign of King George V. The memorial plaque to Jane Darwin in the Breadsall Church gives her such a title though it is assumed she had earned that through work in the local community - "Dame Schools" for ladies were a feature of 19th century England. She would have been entitled to and most likely used the honoury title of Lady acquired through her marriage. Kiwi Kousin 19:20, 6 October 2006 (UTC)
