Name for this article and how it should appear elsewhere

I went ahead and just started this article, now at "First National Bank (Terre Haute, Indiana)". This note to reply to User:Sweet kate who asked at my Talk page: "Hello! I've been slogging away on NRHP listings in Vigo County, Indiana and recently made a little change that I considered quite minor but which two separate users reverted (including you) so I wanted to check in. I proposed changing First National Bank (Terre Haute, Indiana) to First National Bank building (Terre Haute, Indiana), which is consistent with numerous other First National Bank buildings on the First National Bank disambiguation page. It is also consistent with how locals refer to the building. I really don't care either way, but since the link I changed to include "building" on the disambiguation page was left untouched I wasn't sure how to proceed. Honestly I didn't think anyone would have an opinion -- I seem to be the only person actively adding content to any of the Vigo County articles so most of my edits go entirely unnoticed. Thanks. Sweet kate". I see that User:Nyttend reverted one change by Sweet kate in the National Register of Historic Places listings in Vigo County, Indiana article on this point, before I happened to notice the same type of change reimplemented and made the same reversion (unaware of Nyttend's previous edit).

I think Nyttend and I are both trying to implement the same naming policy, for NRHP list-articles, that the NRHP name for a place (in this case "First National Bank" not "First National Bank Building") should be honored in the NRHP list-article. That's because the NRHP list-articles are, well, lists of the NRHP names for places, not other peoples' names for those places. I believe i speak for him too, though, that we do not seek to impose the NRHP names for articles about those places. If an article is better sited at a different name, because common usage is different than what it was when the NRHP name was assigned, or for other reasons, that is fine. In such a case we just request that the NRHP name be retained in the article's NRHP infobox if it has one, and as a bolded alternative name in the lede of the article. And then the NRHP list-article can be edited to still show the NRHP name, but link by pipelink or by a redirect to the then-differently-named article. So, Sweet kate, if you have other information that the common name of this place is "First National Bank Building", then please do present that, and then Nyttend and I will roll over on the name for this article. :)

The policy for disambiguation pages is slightly different. There, there is no special distinction given for the NRHP name for a place. The dab style guidelines are that the actual name of the article should be displayed. But, note that there is no special need for consistency in naming of places on the disambiguation page First National Bank. It includes some places named "First National Bank" and others named "First National Bank Building", because that is what is believed to be their actual, local, common names. We don't have the right to impose a rational naming structure of our own upon the places in the world out there. They are what they are. The disambiguation page is just to assist readers in finding the articles about them, whatever they are called. Hope this helps! I'll watch and reply. --doncram (talk) 21:48, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Okay, by an edit to the First National Bank dab page i see that Sweet kate is asserting that First National Bank of Terre Haute was actually a bank business, not just a branch bank building, a business that later became First Financial Bank. If there needs to be a separate article about the business, rather than an article about both the business and the NRHP-listed bank building, then I would agree of course that the name of the bank building article would usefully be changed to use the word "building". --doncram (talk) 22:25, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

We have this issue at the Pittsburgh, PA list as well — the Dollar Savings Bank link goes to Dollar Bank, rather than Dollar Savings Bank (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) (note that Dollar Savings Bank is about a New York City bank), and thus our coverage of the building is included in the company's article. I don't think this to be an ideal situation. Since we know that the FNB building is notable, we should have the article at this title for now. If Sweet kate (or anyone else) wants to write an article about the banking corporation, it would be best to move this article to "FNB Building" and have the corporate article here at "FNB", simply for disambiguation purposes; however, until/unless that happens, it seems best to me to have this article at the current title.
